Before I started working as a technical writer, I worked as a nanny for two girls, ages 6 and 8. Part of my responsibilities with them was to help with homework and practice reading with the younger girl. I soon discovered I really enjoyed helping them with their school work because I was playing a vital role in the molding of their reading and writing for the future. It was so exciting seeing the youngest finally get a grasp on reading and spelling. When the light bulb went off, that was the most rewarding feeling for me.
I have decided to tutor other children because I want to combine my love of English with my desire to help children learn. I can't think of a better way to utilize my skills than to help shape the minds of young people so that their future can be as bright as they wish.
While I am not certified in teaching, I have spent the better part of my life studying English and all of its many components, such as reading, writing, grammar, spelling, etc. I majored in English and concentrated in Creative Writing in college. In my last semester of college, I held an internship at a local magazine as an editorial intern where I was responsible for creating weekly articles, monthly newsletters, and two large editorial pieces for print. After the internship, I worked as a freelance Food and Drink writer for the sister publication of the magazine. I was assigned a different restaurant every month and I would write reviews or conduct interviews that would be published online and in print.
