About Cynthia

I am a freelance writer/editor with an MFA in Literature and Creative Writing and a BA in Journalism and Mass Communications. I have taught junior high and high school English, led Verbal SAT classes and college essay writing workshops, and tutored privately. I have worked with many young golfers and tennis players on the Island -- my son was a nationally-ranked junior tennis player -- and understand the special circumstances and time considerations of these students. What makes me a great tutor, according to my students, is that I have a way of making reading and writing fun! Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Study Skills

Most of my tutorial students are young men in grades 9-12 who, across the board, have more trouble with homework organization, discipline and focus than with the actual learning process. I work with each student to find a set of study skills that works best and most successfully. For example, I have an English student who has trouble concentrating when he reads, but when I read the material to him, he has perfect recall, thus making homework and tests much easier and much less stressful for him. Some students just need help making a homework plan each week/day. Some need a person there to keep them on track and off the phone and the computer, etc. I try to make it fun, to understand each student, and, most of all, to help them feel successful at the end of the day.
