About Julie

Welcome! As a first year medical student, I possess a unique passion for learning that I love to use in working with my students. Whenever possible, I implement a conceptual approach during my sessions, emphasizing the need to understand the whole picture instead of just memorizing facts. I believe that a valuable tutor will enable her students to truly understand the material and thus become more self-sufficient.

As a collegiate writing consultant and tutor for three years, I offer solid tutoring experience. I worked especially well with international and ESL students and had several students who enjoyed my tutoring so much that they would target my hours in the Writing Center. The teaching principles I learned and developed during my time as a writing tutor easily transition to my area of expertise—science. I also spent some time as a peer mentor for general biology students.

My passion for the natural sciences has been cultivated over three years of intense undergraduate coursework in a topnotch science program. My premed degree is equivalent to a biology major with a chemistry minor, and I also took a year of physics. As I am beginning medical school this summer, I recently took the MCAT (medical college admissions test) and scored in the top 8% of the nation.

I offer both in-person and online sessions, as well as discounted rates for multi-lesson packages. I would love to hear from you, so please do not hesitate to contact me with questions. I look forward to helping you or your student excel!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

My BS in Premed included a year of physiology and anatomy with a cadaver-based laboratory.

Biology

My BS in Premed was essentially comprised of a biology major. I completed courses such as general biology, upper-level cell and molecular biology, upper-level genetics, and biodiversity. I also spent some time as a peer mentor for general biology students.

Chemistry

My BS in Premed essentially included a chemistry minor. The coursework was comprised of one year each of general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. As general chemistry is a frequently requested tutoring subject, I've spent many hours working with students in this area.

Physiology

My BS in Premed included a year of physiology and anatomy with a cadaver-based laboratory.

Proofreading

Three years of consulting and tutoring for my undergraduate institution's Writing Center afforded me ample proofreading experience. I worked with both undergraduate and graduate students on assignments consisting of a wide variety of subject material. Many of my students were international students for whom English was a second language.

Psychology

My BS in Premed required completion of a general psychology course. While preparing for the MCAT, on which I scored in the top 8% of the nation, I refreshed my psychology knowledge. I have since gained experience in actually tutoring the subject.

Writing

I spent three years as a consultant and tutor in my undergraduate institution's Writing Center. I worked with both undergraduate and graduate students on assignments consisting of a wide variety of subject material.
