I am a certified teacher with a M.Ed. in Literacy who specializes in struggling readers and spellers, including those with dyslexia or characteristics of dyslexia, and those who demonstrate deficits in comprehension. I am LETRS certified and experienced in using the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching reading and spelling. I most often use the Barton Reading and Spelling System with students ages 5 through adult. Barton is an OG- based and research-supported program that targets phonics, decoding, and encoding skills. My students regularly progress from reading below grade level to reading at, or above, grade level within one year’s time. I have additional expertise in working with students of all ages who are deaf and hard of hearing to develop language and literacy skills using both auditory-oral and visual approaches. I am fluent in American Sign Language.

I have earned all 5 star reviews on Wyzant because I am passionate about providing services which exceed the expectations of my students. I believe in establishing positive relationships with my clients that allow them to feel comfortable and safe in their interactions with me. It is infinitely rewarding to witness the growth in skills they inevitably demonstrate, but even more rewarding to witness the growth in confidence. Language and reading unlock the world. I hope to have the privilege of working with you or your child in the quest for access to all that lies beyond those doors.

Phonics

I am an experienced, certified teacher and tutor who primarily works with struggling readers and spellers during after-school, evening, and weekend hours. I have been trained in the SPIRE Reading program, an Orton-Gillingham based approach to teaching non-readers and struggling readers, and in the Lindamood-Bell Visualizing and Verbalizing program, which is highly successful for students who may be able to decode but who exhibit deficits in comprehension. In my tutoring of students ages 5 through adult who have difficulties with phonics and decoding, and who may have dyslexia or characteristics of dyslexia, I primarily use the Orton-Gillingham based Barton Reading & Spelling Program. I regularly see tremendous growth in my Barton students; it is not uncommon for them to progress from below grade level readers to on (or above) grade level within a year's time. For deaf and hard of hearing students, including those who use ASL or an English signing system, I provide specialized tutoring in language development, reading, and writing skills. I am fluent in ASL and love finding ways to adapt the reading programs I've described above to the needs and abilities of my D/HH students. In addition to these, I use programs which target deaf and hard of hearing learners specifically (Bedrock, Fairview, etc.). I work with d/Deaf college students who attend Gallaudet University and who seek to improve their vocabulary, reading comprehension, English grammar, and essay-writing skills. I also enjoy working with students of all ages who are learning ASL and who are looking for additional practice with the language. I have all 5-star reviews as a tutor on Wyzant, and I am passionate about consistently providing tutoring services which exceed the expectations of my students (and their parents, for my younger learners). I believe in establishing positive relationships that allow my students to feel comfortable and safe in their interactions with me, as this makes it possible for them to be open and available for learning. My daughter is consistently making progress with Amy!

My daughter has consistently worked with Amy for months! We are seeing positive results and her teacher has said it’s a night and day difference with her spelling. Thanks Amy!

Melissa, 35 lessons with Amy

Amazing Literacy Teacher!

Amy is a patient, kind, knowledgeable literacy teacher whom one can tell loves what she does. I started sessions with he for my son who is just turning 5 to get a head start on learning to read. He looks forward to his sessions with, “Ms. Amy” and she has amazing patience with him. He loves to be competitive and she picked up on that right away and made the learning a competition that he always wins ( he loves it!). She understands he is young and needs to explore and have fun while learning so she makes sure her sessions include that. We will continue on with Amy to learn to read with my son and now my older (high school) daughter, to make her a better reader that won’t struggle anymore, after she completes the reading program with Ms. Amy. In such a short time I am already confident Ms. Amy will not only help my daughter but, also teach my son to read. We all look forward to working with Ms Amy!

Highly knowledgeable and truly helpful tutor!

Out of all tutors I've had lessons with on Wyzant, Amy was the most knowledge and thorough with proofreading my essay. We went through my essay line by line, carefully correcting grammar and sentence structure. I definitely would be returning to her in the future.
