Hello! I have been tutoring both virtually and in person for 6+ years. I hold dual degrees in Linguistics and Cognitive Science, and my undergraduate thesis explored how children's brains learn their first language (both verbally and written). Hello! I have been tutoring both virtually and in person for 6+ years. I hold dual degrees in Linguistics and Cognitive Science, and my undergraduate thesis explored how children's brains learn their first language (both verbally and written). I have the most experience working with elementary aged students, but do have some experience with older children, and I was a virtual K through 4 teacher during COVID. I specialize in teaching phonics and early reading skills to young students, developing reading comprehension, and breaking down elementary math concepts to find where learning gaps have occurred. I use a multi modal approach with my students and offer multiple strategies for solving each problem.
In addition to any curriculum, I love adding multi-sensory activities into my lessons whenever possible. Meaning that learning often doesn't look like JUST doing problems on paper. I use activities like building blocks, sensory bins, physical movement, scavenger hunts, and games whenever possible. I teach using a whole-body approach to engage my students, as oftentimes our brains need more than one input to learn. We will use visual, auditory, and tactile strategies to provide the best learning outcomes.
I also have experience working with children who have specific needs including but not limited to: Dyslexia, ADHD, Speech Impediments, Emotional Impairments, and those who are on the ASD spectrum. My lessons will never force eye contact, be disrupted by fidgeting, or be hindered by being asked to show the skill in another way. I am also a big supporter of customizing each lesson not only to the skill being learned, but working with parents to find a specific reward to help motivate these learners.
I look forward to hearing from you, and getting to know you and your student!
