I have been trying to keep working with students in grades second through fifth when tutoring. I have tutored students ages five through eleven years old in reading, math, and language, vocabulary, and phonics.
Before starting my tutoring job with WyzAnt, I was a Speech-Language Teacher, with experience tutoring after school hours. I was a Bright Futures Tutor at Marion School District in SC,and I helped with an after school program as a certified tutor of Burke County in NC. I helped students learn phonics, reading, and math with Bright Futures Tutoring and helped students work on computer programmed individualized lesson studies with math and reading at the other school district. From 2012 to present, I have tutored students ages five to eleven in reading, math, and speech-language skills.
Before working for Wyzant tutoring, I taught in the special education setting as a Speech-Language Teacher with 60 students per year. I taught Speech-Language skills to students of all ages, pre-K through 12th grade. My greatest strength is that I have 14 years of teaching Speech-Language as it applies to reading readiness, Communication, and Elementary or Early Childhood Education. My daughters really enjoyed their first lesson with Tammy. It was all they talked about after she left and today (the day after) I arrived home from work to find them working on their homework assignments. Tammy listened very carefully to the girls attempts at reading and did a great job motivating them to work just a little bit harder on the tougher words and it was just that motivation that I was looking for in a teacher. We are looking forward to the next lesson!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I had some experience teaching students with ADD and ADHD in elementary school and middle school. I have a teaching certificate for Elementary and Early Childhood Education. I can be of some help with tutoring the different subjects that these students take.
My educational background is in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education. I have taken all tests to be certified in these areas. I would love the tutoring opportunity to help students improve their grades in basic math.
I have recently taken a course online with PBS teacherline. During the course, we learned the specific problems that occur when a student is dyslexic. We learned that repetition is important when teaching phonics and vocabulary with the dyslexic student, even if we have to repeat the same word 20 times, for example. We learned to repeat reading selections with the students, offering them vocabulary lists and phonics instruction related to the reading selections. We learned about the memory problems that come with learning disabilities such as dyslexia. We learned the difficulty such students have with reading words, seeing the letters backwards from the way they really are. We learned about the particular letters that are seen backwards. I can help these students by encouraging them to be patient with themselves and helping them pick out reading material that is interesting to them and informational or helpful toward supplementing their classroom reading material. I worked with some of these students in Speech who had learning disabilities too. They need a lot of repetition and work on individual sound-letter correspondence, decoding of syllables and individual words or word patterns. They need supplemental vocabulary instruction too.
My experience in ear training has been working in the public schools providing ear training to students with articulation disabilities. I have 6 years of experience in the public schools providing this service. I had 2 years of supervised clinical in providing this service and speech therapy to various clients before finishing my college degree in Communication Disorders. If your interest is receiving ear training on the correct or incorrect production of sound phonemes, I can provide the service. I can make the recipient of this service reach the confidence level needed to move onto the practice of the correct production of any consonant or vowel sound that he or she is having to learn through ear training and articulation practice.
I have experience as an Elementary Education teacher and Speech-Language Teacher in grades K-12th. I can help any student in any grade between K-6th with almost any subject and have recent experience as an Elementary grades tutor. I have experience in tutoring and an education degree. Anyone with the need to get help preparing for the PSAT can get my assistance with the test preparation. I can write sample questions or give input for learning vocabulary for example. I can help someone improve writing skills or grammar if that be the need. Someone might need help learning to paraphrase articles to increase reading comprehension. I can discuss using the sample questions and expanding on that if someone needs extra help. We can discuss what the person needs to work on improving and go from there.

My recent experience was working as the Speech-Language Teacher who saw students with Speech-Language impairments, autism, mental disability, or learning disability, integrating their speaking or language/grammar goals from their individualized education plans with elementary type subjects. I did this five years for the state of SC.
I have most recently taken coursework which included tips on teaching reading, writing, or math to students with dyslexia. I learned tips for teaching slow learners in Jan. 2012 for my certificate renewal. This coursework was taught to me through the PBS Teacherline. The teaching method the course taught me to stress is repetition, and the course taught me that it takes up to twenty times sometimes for a new word or concept to be learned by special needs students who have learning disabilities that include memory problems or dyslexia or difficulties with learning writing skills. I also updated my knowledge of children's literature and my knowledge of more recently published literature in specific grade level lists. I assess interests of students so I can get books that make them motivated to try to read and write. Hopefully, students can benefit from my help if they have special needs and learning disabilities.
I have finished coursework on Speech-Language Instruction which prepared me to help students improve in any area of Speech. I have been a certified Speech-Language Therapist for about 11 years. I have worked with persons of all ages with needs to improve their Speech-Language skills in one or more ways. I love to work with people who want to improve their Speech by giving them individualized instruction based on my own individualized evaluations and work as a supplemental therapist for students with any Individualized Education Plans created in the local schools by certified Speech Therapists.

As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I taught grammar. Before I taught the basics of grammar, I had many courses in writing for graduate level and undergraduate level work. High school level writing was not a problem to me, so I know how to help students in elementary, middle school, and high school level by assessing what they know and moving them forward to improve their writing.
