I have tutored students (online or in person) in preschool, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade, middle school, and in adult levels in reading, math, language, vocabulary, speech, spelling, and phonics. I have extensive knowledge of various spelling instructional approaches, spelling rules, patterns, and strategies, including phonics, phoneme awareness, syllabication, word families, prefixes and suffixes and spelling generalizations. I successfully implemented phonics, reading, and spelling tutoring sessions, using the Barton Spelling system and Orton-Gillingham method combined with grade level spelling and vocabulary word lists. I am also very familiar with the general elementary education phonics curriculum. I can informally assess speech articulation skills, using speech therapist guidelines that I learned in work and in studying communication disorders and speech-language pathology. I can also tutor students placed in speech-language therapy who have received Individualized Education Plans from their speech-language therapists at school.
I have been a Speech-Language Teacher(Speech-Language Pathologist) with experience teaching all qualified students in speech-language therapy. I have been tutoring online with the online tutoring site here since July 2020. When parents have the students' Individualized Education Plan with the articulation goals for the upcoming school year, I can target the sounds in their goals and they can see themselves succeed online with me providing the modeling and feedback and keeping track of their progress.
In person, I have tutored reading, math, and speech-language skills. As a full time teacher, I taught in the special education setting doing speech therapy as a Speech-Language Teacher for students of all ages, preschool, kindergarten, elementary, middle school and high school, regular classroom speech-language impaired and special needs students.

Special Needs

Special Needs

My recent experience was working as the Speech-Language Teacher who saw students with Speech-Language impairments, autism, mental disability, or learning disability, integrating their speaking or language/grammar goals from their individualized education plans with elementary type subjects. I did this five years for the state of SC. I have most recently taken coursework which included tips on teaching reading, writing, or math to students with dyslexia. I learned tips for teaching slow learners in Jan. 2012 for my certificate renewal. This coursework was taught to me through the PBS Teacherline. The teaching method the course taught me to stress is repetition, and the course taught me that it takes up to twenty times sometimes for a new word or concept to be learned by special needs students who have learning disabilities that include memory problems or dyslexia or difficulties with learning writing skills. I also updated my knowledge of children's literature and my knowledge of more recently published literature in specific grade level lists. I assess interests of students and suggest videos that make them motivated to try to speak, read or write. Hopefully, students can benefit from my help if they have special needs and learning disabilities.

Great service!

My child is showing great progress. I would definitely recommend Ms. Tammy to tutor anyone's child. She wants to know information that would help her such as words you have noticed is difficult for the child to pronounce.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Prior to meeting, Tammy had asked thorough questions to tailor the lesson to my daughter’s needs. As she was teaching, she provided lots of feedback and was able to customized certain parts of the lesson to match my daughter’s skills and comfort. Tammy was well prepared and had a strong curriculum for our first lesson.

Tutoring review.

During our recent session, Tammy and I went through the sounds that I had trouble pronouncing. She was extremely helpful in guiding me through the correct pronunciation of each sound, and I found her to be very knowledgeable and patient. I truly enjoyed my time with her and appreciated her professionalism throughout the session.

Patient and kind

My son likes Tammy as his teacher. He feels very comfortable speaking with her and taking class with her because she stays patient and kind. She also tries to make it interesting and fun for him especially since hes 5 years old with short attention span. He is usually shy about speaking but she has been able to keep him willing to cooperate and learn from her. Glad to have found her!

Great first lesson!

My daughters really enjoyed their first lesson with Tammy. It was all they talked about after she left and today (the day after) I arrived home from work to find them working on their homework assignments. Tammy listened very carefully to the girls attempts at reading and did a great job motivating them to work just a little bit harder on the tougher words and it was just that motivation that I was looking for in a teacher. We are looking forward to the next lesson!
