Hi, I'm Brock! I'm a physician and current psychiatry resident with a passion for teaching and helping students become more confident learners. I earned my bachelor's degree from Hendrix College and my M.D. from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. My academic background spans biology, psychology, mathematics, writing, and the medical sciences, and my experience editing personal statements and professional writing has also given me a strong background in written English, grammar, and communication.

Teaching has been an important part of my medical training. I have taught and mentored medical students in both one-on-one and group settings, developed lectures and educational materials, and served on my residency's education committee. In 2026, I received an Excellence in Medical Student Teaching award for my work with medical students. I have also served as a medical school admissions interviewer and mentored pre-medical students with applications and interview preparation.

My teaching style is collaborative and adaptable. I like to first understand what a student already knows and where they are getting stuck, then break difficult material into smaller, logical steps. Rather than simply giving students an answer, I use questions, examples, and guided practice to help them understand why an answer is correct and develop skills they can use independently.

Whether you're struggling with Algebra or Biology, polishing an essay, preparing for the USMLE, or working through medical school, I'll tailor our sessions to your goals and learning style. My goal is to create a relaxed environment where asking questions is encouraged and difficult material becomes manageable.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have a strong academic foundation in mathematics from my undergraduate and medical education and have successfully demonstrated my Algebra 1 knowledge through Wyzant's subject assessment. I focus on helping students understand the reasoning behind algebraic concepts rather than simply memorizing formulas or procedures. I can help students build confidence with equations, expressions, functions, word problems, and other foundational Algebra 1 skills while adapting explanations to their current level. My goal is to make challenging problems feel more manageable by breaking them into clear, logical steps and providing plenty of guided practice.
Biology

Biology

As a physician and current resident physician, I have extensive training in biology and the life sciences, including cellular biology, genetics, physiology, microbiology, and human anatomy. My medical education has required me to apply biological principles to increasingly complex clinical problems, giving me a strong understanding of how foundational concepts translate into real-world medicine. I focus on helping students understand the underlying processes rather than simply memorizing facts, using clear explanations and examples to make complex topics easier to grasp. I can tailor instruction to students at the high-school, college, or pre-medical level and help with coursework, exam preparation, and developing stronger scientific reasoning skills.
Psychology

Psychology

I developed a strong foundation in psychology through my undergraduate coursework and have continued applying principles of psychology throughout my medical education and clinical training. My medical background has given me additional experience understanding topics such as human behavior, cognition, learning, memory, development, stress, and mental health in both academic and clinical contexts. I focus on helping students understand psychological concepts clearly, connect theories to practical examples, and distinguish between concepts that can be easy to confuse. I can tailor instruction to the student's level and help with coursework, exam preparation, reading comprehension, and developing effective study strategies.
USMLE

USMLE

I earned my M.D. from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and am a PGY-3 psychiatry resident at the Medical University of South Carolina. My clinical work includes diagnostic assessment and evidence-based pharmacotherapy. I teach medical students through didactic lectures and original review questions and received MUSC Psychiatry’s Golden Apple Teaching Award in June 2026. For USMLE preparation, I emphasize connecting foundational science with clinical vignettes, reasoning through differential diagnoses, and understanding medication mechanisms, particularly in psychiatry and behavioral science.
Writing

Writing

I have extensive experience with academic, professional, and medical writing, including editing personal statements, residency application materials, and other professional documents. My work has focused on improving grammar, organization, clarity, flow, word choice, and the overall effectiveness of a student's or applicant's writing while preserving their individual voice. As a physician and current resident physician, I am especially comfortable helping students with science and medical writing, but I also enjoy working with general academic writing, essays, and personal statements. I teach writing as a process, helping students understand why a change improves their work so they can become stronger and more confident writers independently.
