Do you ever find yourself saying "I'm a bad writer?" Or, "English lit isn't my thing?" My name is Sara, and I've heard this countless times as a tutor and award-winning college writing instructor. I'm here to help "demystify" the writing process, offering you tips and tricks to become a better writer -- not just produce a single piece of better writing.

A bit about me: I completed my Ph.D. in English at Cornell University, where I taught undergraduate English writing courses for 5 years. My specialization is Shakespeare, who can be a daunting figure. Through my teaching, I helped students find connections and enjoyment in texts that can feel distant. In the classroom and in 1-on-1 office hours, I taught students how to closely analyze literature and guided them in developing as multi-faceted writers. I believe that writing is not an "intuitive" process; it's something we have to learn, just like everything else. For two years, I served as the Assistant Director of the Cornell Writing Centers, where I trained tutors in best practices for working with diverse writers. Earlier in my career, I was a tutor -- helping students hone their writing skills in everything from film reviews to lab reports.

If you choose me as your writing tutor, our sessions will be engaging and collaborative. We will start by discussing your goals and concerns: are you struggling to understand the concept of "close reading" or literary analysis? Are you wanting to work on a personal statement for college or graduate school? Whatever your needs, I'll tailor our approach to help you succeed.

Creative Writing

For two years, I developed and facilitated playwriting workshops in my local community, working with writers of all levels and ages (from teens to elders). Together, we explored the fundamentals of playwriting, and participants left with pieces they were proud of. My own background as a student of screenplay and fiction writing deeply informs how I approach these sessions, as I remember firsthand how intimidating (and exciting!) it can be to share a work in progress. I look forward to helping you reach your creative writing goals, particularly if you're working on plays, fiction, or screenplays.

Essay Writing

I hold a Ph.D. in English and have five years of experience developing and teaching college writing seminars, where I guided students through a range of genres: personal narratives, literary analysis, film reviews, and research papers. I also worked as a writing tutor throughout my undergraduate and graduate studies, including specialized work with students on their graduate and medical school application essays. More recently, as the Assistant Director of the Cornell Writing Centers, I trained undergraduate tutors to support students across all forms of writing. I love this work and look forward to helping you meet your writing goals!
