Hello there! I would love the opportunity to work with your elementary/middle school daughter(s) or son(s) in the areas of reading, ELA, or writing. I have been a public school educator for 24 years. My first three degrees are in the fields of early childhood and elementary education/curriculum. In addition, I have an earned doctorate in educational leadership. I have taught, tutored, or mentored in every grade-PreK-12 at some point in my career. (I spent 12 years teaching third grade.) I have served as an adjunct at a technical school where I taught early childhood methods as well.

In addition to my degrees, I earned a reading endorsement/certification and leadership certification from Columbus State. Yes, I am truly a life long learner and desire to foster that love of learning in each and every child and teacher I get to meet daily.

I know the curriculum that students are required to master (Common Core) and utilize a plethora of research based instructional strategies designed to help students master state standards while making learning FUN-as it should be! :) I can assist with study skills or just help your child with vocabulary development as well. Writing is just as important as reading. I can help your child with various types of writing and the writing process. I can also help them to effectively formulate constructed responses.

I have been an assistant principal for 11 years. As an instructional leader, my job responsibilities have included curriculum, instruction, and assessment. I help teachers by communicating best practices/methods for working with ALL students and work with them to ensure that students are being taught the necessary skills/concepts to meet or exceed state standards. I also manage the Response to Intervention process. In addition. I work with special education teachers to ensure that students are growing academically and their needs are met based on Individual Education Plans

I am also a pianist. I took lessons for 15 plus years and served as a church musician before rel

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

I am responsible for reviewing and helping to develop all learning plans for students with ADD/ADHD where I work. I know the various instructional strategies and accommodations that should be used with them, such as redirection, repetition, extended time for assignments, frequent breaks, and differentiated assignments based on need, interest, and ability.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I have had professional learning and college courses that address the needs of children with dyslexia. In public schools, a dyslexic child is one that could be identified for having a learning disability and may qualify for special education services. I have taught several students with dyslexia/learning disabilities and they have done very well academically and emotionally. They need more time and patience to learn. I'm patient. I don't mind teaching the same content in various ways. They may need repetition. They also may need extra practice to understand phonics. Some students with dyslexia learn to read by vocabulary immersion and sight word recall. Either way, I am capable of using both methods or a combination of methods. I currently am responsible for managing the special education department where I work. I review IEPs and help teachers and parents develop the best individualized education plan for students. I know my special education students personally and meet with them periodically to discuss the learning goals we help them create. It's my responsibility to make sure teachers have the strategies and materials they need. I have the teaching background and training to do so. It's my ultimate responsibility to collaborate with the special education teacher to monitor each child's growth.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have 22 years of experience in elementary education. I have three degrees-all in elementary education/curriculum. I taught third grade for 12 years. All my students did well on state tests. I have been an assistant principal for 9 years. I currently teach teachers about best practices and the curriculum. I am an assistant principal for curriculum, instruction, and assessment. When working with the teachers we continually review the GA standards to ensure students are getting what they need. We assess, review data, discuss strategies for helping students who don't do well, and design ways to challenge those who meet standards-continually. I am charged with the responsibility of making sure teachers have and use the appropriate instructional strategies to meet the needs of ALL our students. They all MUST show growth. I work to make sure students and teachers are having fun while doing it.
Handwriting

Handwriting

I took a course in college and was required to work through a handwriting book in preparation to teach students correct letter formation. I teach block style and D''Nelian.
Phonics

Phonics

I hold a reading endorsement from Columbus State University in addition to three degrees in elementary education. I have taken and passed several courses on the teaching of reading and have had 2 courses that address the teaching of phonics, in isolation.
Piano

Piano

I studied piano theory for 15 years. I served as a church musician for 22 years before relocating to the Conyers area to take a job as an assistant principal.
Reading

Reading

I successfully taught third grade for several years. I am reading endorsed which means I specialize in the teaching of reading. My responsibility for years has been to facilitate professional learning that assists teachers with knowing the state standards and best practices to implement the curriculum. I love children. I love teaching.
Study Skills

Study Skills

Teaching study skills is what effective educators do daily. When I teach students, I combine study skills with academics so that they are able to take what they get from me and apply it to learning when they are at home or school. They can also be taught in isolation and should be taught that way especially with children who may be economically disadvantaged, ADD/ADHD, or learning disabled.
Writing

Writing

I know the writing standards and I know strategies for helping them retain the information that they learn. The writing standards work hand in hand with the reading standards. They make up exactly 50 percent of the common core reading and ELA standards. Students in fifth grades are required to write on the GA Milestones at the end of the year. I can help with formulating constructed responses and essay writing. Both types will be required. I have been trained in assisting students and teachers in the writing process. When I worked on my reading endorsement, a course in the teaching of writing, specifically, was required. I've also participated in a plethora of workshops and professional learning in the teaching of writing to further assist teachers and students with the writing process. The RACE writing strategy is one that I use with students quite often to assist with constructed response items. I use graphic organizers as tools for assisting students with formulating essays-narrative, persuasive, and informational. I also encourage students to keep a notebook for compiling lists of categorized words to reference as they write about certain topics. These notebooks serve as excellent writing tools for students as they also help with vocabulary development.

Wonderul tutor

Renee is an excellent tutor. She is very kind and patient and since she started working with my nephew his confidence in reading has improved greatly. My nephew has ADHD and she is wonderful the way she gets him back on task when he has trouble focusing at times. She really seems to care and only wants the best for him. We have also noticed an improvement in his overall self-esteem. We are very pleased with Renee and we would recommend her to anyone. She is awesome.

Great listener, patient, thorough

Ms. Renee promptly and directly addressed the concerns I have for my son's academic development. Today, she was able to throughly assess him. If we work together, we can develop a plan to improve my son's reading and phonetical deficits. This way he will be more adequately prepared and successful in the First Grade. I believe that Ms. Renee is well-rounded. She will guide the parents and direct the child with the tools for successful reading development.

Very Patient

She is very patient with me and that is something that I need in a tutor. If I don't understand something she will continue to keep going over it until I do.
