My name is Erica M., and I just earned my Ph.D. in the History of the Exact Sciences from Brown University. My interdisciplinary interests in ancient history and science are based in my previous work for NASA as a researcher on human/computer interaction and ontological modelling, along with my previous education. My name is Erica M., and I just earned my Ph.D. in the History of the Exact Sciences from Brown University. My interdisciplinary interests in ancient history and science are based in my previous work for NASA as a researcher on human/computer interaction and ontological modelling, along with my previous education. I graduated Summa cum Laude from The College of Wooster with a B.A. in Classical Languages before coming to Eastern Michigan University for my graduate certificate in Artificial Intelligence and M.A. in Linguistics. I then attended the University of Chicago for a second M.A. in History of Science in order to transition academic disciplines.

I have previously taught composition courses at the college level, both in person and online, and worked as a writer and editor for CBR.com. Combined with my experience working as an editor for The LINGUIST List and my role as a writer for a local law firm, I have more than a decade of experience with training and teaching composition, writing, and editing. I have also written many professional academic papers, including three theses, and am experienced with multiple citation styles. I have also published more general, public-facing pieces for venues like Eidolon, Contingent Magazine, Lady Science, Lateral Magazine, First Person Scholar, and the blog for the Journal of the History of Ideas.

I have studied ballet since the age of three. At 10, the youngest age possible, I was accepted into the Dance Ensemble of Michigan. I attended the College of Wooster on a dance scholarship. I taught and demonstrated ballet professionally with Studio 1: School of Dance in Ann Arbor.

I earned my B.A. in Classics before earning my Ph.D. in History of Science where my focus was on Babylonian Astronomy. I have continued my work in classics through online teaching and participation in living classics programs (speaking Latin and Greek). I am well-versed in not only Latin and Greek but also Sanskrit, Akkadian, and the cuneiform script. I specialize in astronomy from Babylonia to Greece to India to the Islamic world.

I performed as a homeschool teacher for a family of three elementary school students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. I helped the children excel in their homeschool curricula and was invited back by the family to take over teaching the next year as well. I have experience managing different expectations for different age groups and all required testing and documentation. I specialize in trying to make learning fun by staying involved, drawing on kids' personal experiences and preferences, and finding ways to make learning more than just sitting at a desk.

I received my B.A. from The College of Wooster in Classical Languages, where I tutored in Latin for three and a half years. I continued to tutor in Latin while earning my M.A. in Linguistics at Eastern Michigan University. During my undergrad I held the office of Secretary, Vice President, then President of our local chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the national honorary society for students of Latin and Greek, of which I was also a member for three years. I was also a member of Phi Sigma Iota, the national honorary society for students of foreign languages, for my senior year. As part of my Senior Thesis I wrote the beginnings of a new introductory Latin textbook based on modern language learning techniques and based off of the plot of Indiana Jones. I also volunteered at a local Montessori school teaching Elementary aged children Latin.

After earning my M.A. in Linguistics with a specialty in NLP and AI, I leveraged my experience to work as a research intern at NASA. My focus was on natural language interfaces for autonomous vehicles. Since then, I returned to academia to study ancient languages and how language intersects with science in ancient scientific texts.

While some of my favorite stories are still the ones that children are "forced" to read in school, my own personal library is well stocked with everything from post-modern works to graphic novels, and I make a particular effort to stay well informed about young adult dystopian fiction, for Plato's allegory of the cave is no less interesting read in a Lemony Snicket book than read in the original Greek.

I also spent three years as an editor for the world's largest online linguistic resource.
