My name is Erica M. and I graduated Summa cum Laude from The College of Wooster with a B.A. in Classical Languages before coming to Eastern Michigan University for my graduate certificate in Artificial Intelligence an M.A. in Linguistics. I
I am also qualified to tutor in aspects of the English language, including Grammar, Proofreading, Reading, Writing, and English in general. My experience working as an editor for The LINGUIST List as well as my role as a writer for a local law firm have given me years of experience with the English language. I have written many professional academic papers, including three theses, and am experienced with multiple citation styles. I have also published more general, public facing pieces, for venues like Eidolon, Contingent Magazine, Lady Science, Lateral Magazine, First Person Scholar, and the blog for the Journal of the History of Ideas.

My specialty is teaching history, linguistics, and languages, and I am a go-to for guidance in writing -- short- or long-term projects, academic or broader audiences, I can help you build and complete your project. I am expert with computers, specializing in Windows OS and Office products. I have earned a graduate certificate in Artificial Intelligence and worked for multiple years as a software developer and the leader of the IT team. I also worked as a researcher for the Autonomy Incubator at NASA's Langley Research Center.

Fun fact: I love learning and teaching, but to get my head out of the books (or away from the computer screen) I also train in the circus arts, including aerial silks and both static and flying trapeze.

I have studied ballet since the age of three. At 10, the youngest age possible, I was accepted into the Dance Ensemble of Michigan. I attended the College of Wooster on a dance scholarship. I taught and demonstrated ballet professionally with Studio 1: School of Dance in Ann Arbor.
English

English

My M.A. in linguistics gives me a thorough understanding of the inner workings of the English language, which is solidified by my years studying the intricate grammar of Latin and Ancient Greek. I spent three years working as an editor for the world's largest online linguistics journal, The LINGUIST List, and another two years as a legal writer and editor for a law firm. I currently teach composition at Washtenaw Community College and work as an English reading, grammar, and composition instructor for all ages.

My M.A. in Linguistics gives me a thorough understanding of the inner workings of grammar, which is solidified by my years studying the intricate grammar of Latin and Ancient Greek. I received my B.A. from The College of Wooster in Classical Languages, where I tutored in Latin for three and a half years. I continued to tutor in Latin while earning my M.A. in Linguistics at Eastern Michigan University. During my undergrad I held the office of Secretary, Vice President, then President of our local chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the national honorary society for students of Latin and Greek, of which I was also a member for three years. I was also a member of Phi Sigma Iota, the national honorary society for students of foreign languages, for my senior year. As part of my Senior Thesis I wrote the beginnings of a new introductory Latin textbook based on modern language learning techniques and based off of the plot of Indiana Jones. I also volunteered at a local Montessori school teaching Elementary aged children Latin.
Literature

Literature

My grandfather was an English professor at the University of Michigan, so I was raised on the Classics. While earning my B.A. in Classical Languages and my M.A. in Linguistics I was inundated with the humanities and the great works of literature. While some of my favorite stories are still the ones that children are "forced" to read in school, my own personal library is well stocked with everything from post-modern works to graphic novels, and I make a particular effort to stay well informed about young adult dystopian fiction, for Plato's allegory of the cave is no less interesting read in a Lemony Snicket book than read in the original Greek.

Knowledgeable, patient, and extremely helpful tutor

Erica helped me with my essays for my applications to graduate school. From outlining each of my essays to editing my final drafts, she was incredibly helpful in ensuring I showed my own voice as a candidate while still answering each part of the essay questions within the word limit. Erica knows so much about the application process for higher-education programs, which was very helpful to me. She also edited my resume and gave me tips on how to strengthen it. I highly recommend Erica as a tutor for application essays, resume and/or cover letter reviews, and all general writing. I'm so happy to have found her!
