I always knew I wanted to be a teacher! I have a masters of education from Tufts University, and over 25 years of teaching in a wonderful public school district. I am dedicated to helping children learn. Young children need to have learning be meaningful in order to assimilate the new knowledge. Throughout the years, I have refined multiple strategies to help children learn.

I use a variety of hands-on materials to help children stay focused, interested and motivated. I have worked with many children with various disabilities with much success. My two boys, one with Aspergers and one with ADHD have forced me to experience firsthand how important it is to have patience and realistic expectations. All children can learn and many times the way information is presented is key. I would love to work with you and your child to help him reach his full potential.

I am willing to meet at the public library or travel to your home.

ADHD

ADHD

Both my son and husband have ADHD. I have been working in a public school for over 28 years and every year there is at least one child who displays ADHD characteristics, with or without the official diagnosis. I know they need lots of breaks, learn best by first having an educator identify their best learning modality and then use that modality during instruction. I also was one of the editors of a book about non-drug treatments for ADHD.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a lifetime teacher certificate from the State of RI in Early Childhood to grade 2.
Phonics

Phonics

I have taught grades K and 1 for over 25 years. These early grades have a heavy concentration of phonics. I have been trained in a variety of phonics programs throughout the years. Currently I am using Project Read in the classroom. I am also trained in Dibels, which helps pinpoint weaknesses in phonics.
Reading

Reading

I have been teaching children to read for years very successfully. I use a variety of methods, such as whole words, sound segmentation and decoding skills. I am extremely patient. I teach using different modalities. I also know several comprehension strategies that help make reading meaningful.
