Bio

I was a graduate student in mathematics at Caltech and a postdoc at Columbia University. I left academia to work in industry, but I enjoy teaching. I have written dozens of articles and a book on applying mathematics for general audiences. I'm working on a parent's guide to algebra and book on applying economics to improve environmentalism. I've tutored mathematics, statistics, economics, computer science, and programming since 2013 on other sites.

My goal is to make the material make sense to you. Does it work? Sometimes. I had a 200:1 positive:negative review ratio. I'm constantly trying to improve.

As a graduate student and postdoc, I was a teaching assistant for and then taught calculus, linear algebra, combinatorics, probability, and multivariable calculus, among others. I also coached Caltech's Putnam team and I can help with contest mathematics. I usually tutor college students, but I have also tutored many high school students and a few graduate students.

I am available both for online and live lessons.

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

Combinatorics was one of my favorite subjects in college and I enjoyed taking three courses on it in the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics program. I wrote my senior thesis in combinatorial design theory. I took and was a TA for advanced combinatorics classes in graduate school. I have tutored students both for discrete math classes for computer science majors (covering things like Turing machines) and discrete mathematics classes which are alternatives to calculus (emphasizing things like proofs by induction and Euclid's algorithm).
Finite Math,

Finite Math

I have tutored many students in finite mathematics over the past four years. I have also tutored subjects that use the ideas covered in finite mathematics courses. I can help whether your finite mathematics course focuses on logic and set theory, probability and statistics, or linear programming.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I used linear algebra throughout the core graduate classes in mathematics (abstract algebra, analysis, and topology/geometry). I apply linear algebra professionally within Machine Learning. I have tutored students both in calculation-based and proof-based linear algebra courses.

Poker

I used to play poker professionally, concentrating on Hold'em variants. I preferred to coach and coached many of the Sit-N-Go (SNG) players at the top of the Sharkscope leaderboards, including one player who went from not knowing whether a flush beat a straight to the dominant player on Full Tilt's medium stakes SNGs. I made dozens of instructional videos for StoxPoker (which merged with CardRunners) and PokerStrategy. I co-authored a book, The Math of Hold'em, aimed at poker players, covering mathematical aspects of poker strategy, analysis, and bankroll management. I wrote ICM Explorer, a program for investigating the Independent Chip Model of tournament equity.

Best Tutor out there

I hesitate to write this review because Doug is already busy enough and if more people use him it will be hard for me to get on schedule. However I have to give credit where credit is due. Doug is very patient, very smart and very hard working. He explains things so that even the least knowledgeable student can understand. I have siblings in college and I have already told them they should reach out to Doug for help when they get to these kind of classes. Doug’s services are worth every penny and more.

Great Calc Tutor

My son continues to learn a lot from his time with Doug (multivariable calculus). Doug is able to find problems that help explain the big picture, which is really great for my son's learning style.

Excellent

Just excellent. Very nice. Explains complicated topics very nicely. I was having some difficulty in a course and Douglas met me immediately. He explained my issue vrry well. Now I feel I can do this assignment. Thank you

Impressive Tutor

Doug is extremely impressive. My son’s math course was entirely problem-based and very challenging, so much so that the problems sometimes stumped other tutors. Doug quickly assessed my son’s strengths and weaknesses. He made sure that my son thoroughly understood the concepts at the heart of each problem, so that my son was not only able to do the work at hand but knew how to approach new problems on his own. After a term working with Doug, my son is a much stronger and more confident and flexible math student. In addition, Doug always did his best to make himself available when my son needed him. We’re very grateful for his help and look forward to continuing to work with him.

Patient, knowledgeable

Douglas helped me go over some of my discrete mathematics homework and it was clear that he knew the topic well. He was patient with explaining what was necessary and used many great analogies.

Excellent demonstrational skills

Great help to brush up my skills. Was feeling a little stressed before my session with Doug. He was patient and explained things very well. Would definitely use Doug again. No more stress!

Simplifies Complicated Problems so They Can be Understood!

Douglas breaks down complicated stats problem so that they are easy to understand and attain for future reference. I am not great at excel, and for an MBA program, it is much needed. Douglas sat for an hour walking me through the process of finding the confidence interval within an excel spreadsheet, and greatly helped me with my difficult assignment. Douglas is the best!!

Will use again. Extremely helpful

Really liked how Douglas established a baseline to see what I knew so he could build from that. It brought out weaknesses that I didnt know I had which made understanding further concepts much easier. Most very intelligent people have difficulty in explaining concepts to someone just learning them as they think they should be common knowledge. But Douglas breaks things down in a very understandable way that anyone can understand which is a rare thing to find. Will use again for sure.

Great stats tutor!

I turned to Douglas when I was struggling keeping up with the material in my Stats class. As someone who has no prior background in Stats, it was very beneficial to talk out the concepts with him because my lectures are not recorded. He is very knowledgable and explains the concepts in a very straightforward matter. He is also super available and even met me during a snowstorm, which I am super grateful for! I'll be sure to book another session. :) Thank you Douglas!
