About Emily

I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching reading. This approach is very effective with students who have dyslexia, or with anyone who is having trouble learning to read. I have a Master's in Early Childhood Special Education, and can work with elementary-aged students in all subjects, and can help with study and organizational skills. Each child has a unique set of learning styles, interests, strengths, and personality traits - I enjoy the challenge of finding strategies that work for the individual child.

I have experience working in a public school setting, as well as private tutoring experience. I have seen quick progress using a structured, one-on-one setting, even with children who are having great difficulty learning in school.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I have a Master's degree in Early Childhood Special Education. I also have my Teacher-Level Certificate in Orton-Gillingham, from the Children's Dyslexia Center of Cranston. I have experience working with young children with dyslexia, and I enjoy helping children become more proficient readers.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Master's in Early Childhood Special Education. I have two years teaching in this area, plus several years of experience tutoring young children with various needs. In addition, I am certified in Orton-Gillingham to help children with dyslexia. I enjoy figuring out how each individual student learns and catering to their needs.

Phonics

I have a Master's in Early Childhood Special Education from George Washington University. In addition, I am certified in Orton-Gillingham for reading instruction. I have two years experience teaching children with various learning disabilities, plus several more years experience tutoring, most recently with children who have dyslexia. The Orton-Gillingham approach that I use is very effective for teaching children who have difficulty with reading, writing and spelling.

Special Needs

I have a Master's in Early Childhood Special Education from George Washington University, where I was awarded an award for outstanding achievement. I worked for two years in a public school setting working with children with various learning disabilities. Since then, I have been certified in Orton-Gillingham for teaching children with dyslexia. I also have several years experience tutoring children with a variety of learning differences.

Vocabulary

I received my BA in English and MA in Early Childhood Special Education.

Patient and Reliable

My son told me after his lesson today how much he liked his reading teacher. I really feel as if Emily is making a difference on a lot of different levels. I'm very happy to have her working with my son.
