Hi! I’m Ian, a recent graduate of Brown University with a 4.0 science GPA. I majored in Science, Technology, and Society on a premed track. I’m happy to tutor any subject to any grade level, but I specialize in standardized tests (SAT/MCAT), high school and college level science, and college applications. I scored a 5 on the AP tests for Biology, Physics 1, and Chemistry; a 1580 on the SAT; and a 522 on the MCAT, all of which is in the 99th percentile. Being an excellent learner is critical...
Being an excellent learner is critical for having the foundational knowledge to teach, but good tutoring also requires active listening and hands-on experience. I’ve been tutoring 1-on-1 for over 4 years, working with students from elementary school to college, across subjects from reading and arithmetic to statistics and organic chemistry.
My approach to tutoring combines guiding questions, analogies, and examples to create stepping stones to content mastery. For instance, when I was teaching the behavior of electromagnetic (EM) waves in various media to a college student, I compared the peaks of the waves to monster trucks leaving at a specified time interval, where they first travel on a smooth road before hitting sticky mud. I asked the student what would happen to the number of trucks passing by a certain point in a given time and the distance between the trucks on one surface vs the other. The student correctly answered that the frequency wouldn’t change but the distance between trucks would decrease. This helped them understand that as light waves and other EM waves pass through different media, their frequency stays the same but the wavelength will change; a conclusion they could not previously arrive at.
In every session, I work with patience and positivity, customizing my approach to my student's learning needs and pace. Please feel free to reach out with any questions, and I look forward to helping you reach your academic goals!
