I’m a fourth year undergraduate student at Brown University with a 4.0 GPA studying biochemistry and data science. I have worked as a teaching assistant for the Biochemistry class at Brown University last semester. My work as a biochemistry teaching assistant was fully in person, producing and delivering lecture content to dozens of students during two-hour sessions each week and working one on one with students, addressing their specific questions. Weekly for the last six years, I have tutored high school students in Chemistry, Biology, Math, English, and also helped in writing applications for summer programs. My work as a tutor has mainly been online over zoom, and over the years, I have developed strategies to keep the student engaged in an interactive teaching format while working remotely.
In my teaching, I emphasize the importance of identifying patterns based on known information so that the student can truly learn the material instead of simply memorizing it. In the subject of chemistry and biology especially, this practice of first assessing the context of new material is essential to form genuine long-term understanding, avoiding tedious rote memorization that doesn’t stick with the student and fails to provide them an ability to apply their superficial knowledge. This emphasis on deep context-based understanding has served my students well as they quickly improve not only their grasp of the material, but also how effectively they can deploy their understanding in solving problems on exams. I provide students with strategies for how to study and learn material effectively that can be applied to any subject long after I help them as a tutor.
