About Nan

Bio

After years of teaching and learning, I’m offering lessons centered on creativity: language learning based on movies, and accompanying people with creative processes.

As an artist and language learner myself, I’ve found that most effective learning takes place when we focus on the things that interest us. That’s why my lessons are thematically oriented, and provide ample space for conversation –it’s when we communicate with someone else that we get to use the tools we have and hone them...

After years of teaching and learning, I’m offering lessons centered on creativity: language learning based on movies, and accompanying people with creative processes.

As an artist and language learner myself, I’ve found that most effective learning takes place when we focus on the things that interest us. That’s why my lessons are thematically oriented, and provide ample space for conversation –it’s when we communicate with someone else that we get to use the tools we have and hone them the best. I ultimately believe that experience is the best teacher so I always combine learning resources with hands-on practice!

Previously, I have tutored adults in private language schools and college settings; middle school students at Inspiring Minds (RI); elementary school students through the Manton Avenue Project (RI); and community members at large through libraries.

I studied filmmaking at the School of Tokyo Visual Arts in Japan, and since graduating in 2008, I have produced, written, and edited film and video work around the world –including Argentina, Chile, Antarctica, and the US. I’ve worked with companies such as NHK Japan and Panasonic LTD as well as independent filmmakers.

As an artist and writer, my work has been recognized with the MacColl Johnson Fellowship, Documentary Film grants; several artist and writer residencies, and the National Arts Strategies' New England Creative Community Fellowship. My work has been published in printed and online journals; and has been selected as part of film festivals in Spain and the US. I have served in reviewing panels for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and several regional arts organizations.
