I’m a passionate science educator with 20+ years of experience helping students build confidence, curiosity, and strong academic skills. I hold a BS in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from UC Santa Cruz and an MS in Science Writing from Johns Hopkins University, and I specialize in making complex scientific ideas clear, engaging, and accessible.

My work includes years of marine ecology field experience and the development of several outdoor and experiential education programs. I managed the education program at UC Santa Cruz’s Long Marine Laboratory, where I created a 100-hour accredited training course that guided college students in interpreting scientific research and developing strong communication skills.

My teaching background spans biology, ecology, marine biology, botany, zoology, public speaking, and science writing. I’ve taught and mentored learners of all ages and abilities, including extensive experience supporting developmentally disabled adults, and I love meeting students where they are to help them grow.

I’m also available to help families curate homeschool curricula that blend academic learning with real-world and outdoor experiences. Above all, I aim to inspire curiosity and empower students to learn with confidence.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I hold a Master's degree in Science Writing from Johns Hopkins University and have been published in The Atlantic, The Washington Post, local Rhode Island magazines, UC Santa Cruz, and as a contributing editor for scientific journal articles. I have written and coached creative writing to serve as scripts for a variety of stage presentations on science and history in San Francisco, New York, and Rhode Island. I am most passionate about creative nature writing, which has the power to move hearts and minds in ways that journalism and scientific studies are simply not fit to do.
Environmental Science

Environmental Science

I have taught marine and environmental science to diverse audiences, from university-level trainees and volunteers to K–12 students, through curriculum development, interpretive training, and dynamic, place-based instruction. My background in research, data collection, and habitat management allows me to translate complex scientific concepts into clear, compelling lessons grounded in real-world practice. Combined with my science writing experience, I excel at helping learners connect multi-disciplinary scientific principles to the environmental issues and their possible emerging solutions.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I hold a Master's degree in Science Writing from Johns Hopkins University and have been published in The Atlantic, The Washington Post, local Rhode Island magazines, UC Santa Cruz, and as a contributing editor for scientific journal articles. I have written and coached personal essays to serve as scripts for a variety of stage presentations on science and history in San Francisco, New York, and Rhode Island. Essays are a powerful way to communicate, from journalism and creative writing to professional applications and personal memoirs.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have extensive experience in training and coaching public speaking, covering a range of settings from professional science presentations to leading public tours and live storytelling on stage. I created and led a 100-hour college-accredited training course for students to lead tours of the marine research conducted at Long Marine Laboratory at UC Santa Cruz, and have curated and coached storytellers for live event series in San Francisco, New York, and Rhode Island. I have trained and managed tour guides and educators leading place-based education programs in ecology, biology, and history.
Zoology

Zoology

I served as a zoology course tutor for two years at Cabrillo Community College and UC Santa Cruz, and tutored and guest-lectured for a university invertebrate zoology course. I created and taught a university-accredited course at UCSC covering physiology, ecology, and taxonomy from invertebrates to birds and mammals for UCSC's Long Marine Laboratory, developed a middle-school ecology and zoology curriculum for use aboard an educational vessel in Woods Hole, MA, and created wildlife tours for diverse audiences that integrated core zoological concepts. My experience as an educator is enriched by extensive hands-on fieldwork with a wide range of animals across Central California, Hawaii, and Tahiti. I combine strong academic instruction with vivid field experience to help students build deep understanding and confidence in zoology.
