I have been teaching a variety of English-related courses and private lessons to culturally and age diverse students for 25 years. I have teaching experience with elementary, middle school, high school and university students, as well as tutoring experience with adults in ESL programs.

In 1985, I graduated from Emerson college with a BFA in Creative Writing and a minor in Film Studies. I then went on to graduate school at Sarah Lawrence College, where I received my Masters in Fiction Writing and Poetry. While there, I took my first teaching job in the ACES program, an afternoon program for high school students gifted in the arts. I taught Creative Writing workshops there and was the advising editor on the school's literary magazine. After graduating from Sarah Lawrence in 1989, I took on another position as an adjunct professor of Freshman Composition at Sacred Heart University, CT.

In 1991, I left the New York City area to return to Boston, where I began working for Berlitz On Campus, teaching ESL to university and university-bound international students. After three years, I was promoted to Academic Director, hiring and training new teachers, scheduling classes, etc. I worked in this position for two years, then decided to return to teaching, where my heart was.

Concurrently, I worked for the College Gate program, a summer program for gifted elementary and middle school students. There, I continued teaching Fiction. Also, from 2001 to the present, I have tutored international students, particularly for TOEFL prep and IELTS, two English proficiency exams.

My approach in private lessons is to have students bring me their written work and go over it with them. I will also give short writing assignments during lessons, usually of a remedial nature, focusing on specific areas of weakness. Though I help with the nuts and bolts--whether that's grammar or craft--my main goal is to convince them that writing is an extension of themselves. It's not just another thing they have to do.
