Hello! My name is David, and I have been an English language and literature teacher for over 20 years. I have helped thousands of students of all ages, from Kindergarten through university-level, to improve their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

I earned my B.A. in English from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst, and I was an international student at the University of Hull, United Kingdom. I went on to earn my Master of Arts in English Literature from the University of Hull, and I completed all coursework towards a PhD in English from the University of Arizona, where I taught in the Writing Program for four years.

In addition to teaching college students, I have taught children and adults English as a Foreign language in Beijing, China. I have also taught ESL to students from all over the world at several community colleges. I currently am an Adjunct Professor at Rhode Island College.

In 2020, I was awarded the RITELL Outstanding Adult Practitioner award for my “extraordinary contributions to the profession of Adult Education,” and I was a Humanities Scholar for the Lippitt House Museum in 2023.

If you are looking for a creative, patient, and highly effective teacher to help you prepare for the SAT verbal, ACT, GRE verbal or TOEFL, or whether you are just beginning to learn English, or if you are a parent looking for a good tutor for your child, who may need help with essay writing or the revision process, I would love to work with you!

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

With over 20 years of teaching experience, I help students develop skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. In addition to teaching, I have been a stand-up comedian and perform music as a singer-songwriter. Learning to laugh, breathe, and relax—or even just acknowledging how nervous we are, can be a great first step to better public speaking. Learning how to pause, pace ourselves, and use rhetorical devices like repetition can improve confidence. Learning how to pay attention to the sounds of the words we use, our diction, alliteration, and emphasis can help make our speech compelling to audiences. And even details such as posture, facial expression, and what we with our hands while we address an audience can have a big impact in our public speaking. I work with students of all levels and help them to improve and gain confidence by giving them plenty of opportunities to try out different approaches.
Reading

Reading

I have helped thousands of students improve their reading and comprehension skills. As someone who has overcome dyslexia and went on earn an advanced degree in English literature, I understand both how challenging reading can be, and how fun it can be to master.
