Welcome to a safe learning space!

Just about everyone struggles with math at some point in their studies, especially if they are serious about studying math. It frequently occurs because a concept has been missed, the student has not sat with the problem long enough to work through it properly, or some combination of the two.

Welcome to a safe learning space!

Just about everyone struggles with math at some point in their studies, especially if they are serious about studying math. It frequently occurs because a concept has been missed, the student has not sat with the problem long enough to work through it properly, or some combination of the two.

The best way to learn math is to patiently work through problems, so that is what we will do. When a concept is missing, we will fill it in and continue. Arriving at the correct answer is important, but being able to arrive at the correct answer on your own is more important. We will focus on understanding why each step matters, and we won't be done until you can explain it to me. However, if you have a specific workflow that you would prefer, then we can follow whatever best suits your needs.

As for me, I have earned both a PhD and an MS in Mathematics from West Virginia University, an MS in Computer Science from the University of Rhode Island, and a BS in Physics and Math from Gordon College. My PhD research involved mostly linear algebra, differential equations, and graph theory. I have been tutoring, teaching, and assisting in calculus classrooms and drop-in tutoring sessions for several years. I have also taught three sections of a math course which covered everything from fractions through factoring quadratic equations. Prior to studying at West Virginia University (and well before the emergence of generative AI), I worked as a software developer using mostly Python and PHP on Windows and Linux servers.

If you are interested in hiring me, feel free to contact me through this website. Otherwise, I hope that you find the tutor or workflow that best suits you.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I taught 3 sections of a course covering basic fractions through factoring quadratic equations, including basic geometry concepts. Additionally, I have 5 years of experience at a university drop in tutoring center, covering any course from prealgebra through differential equations. We will work through the material with a focus on understanding the concepts and practice solving problems using proper notation. This will build habits that allow you to succeed in future math courses.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

While I have not formally taught Algebra 2, I have 5 years of experience at a university drop in tutoring center, covering any course from prealgebra through differential equations. We will work through the material with a focus on understanding the concepts and practice solving problems using proper notation. This will build habits that allow you to succeed in future math courses.
Calculus

Calculus

I taught one section of a calculus 1 class which covered some theory along with precalculus concepts. Additionally, I worked as a teaching assistant and grader for several years in the calculus sequence. Also, I have 5 years of experience at a university drop in tutoring center, covering any course from prealgebra through differential equations. We will work through the material with a focus on understanding the concepts and practice solving problems using proper notation. This will build habits that allow you to succeed in future math courses.
Geometry

Geometry

While I have not formally taught Geometry, I have 5 years of experience at a university drop in tutoring center, covering any course from prealgebra through differential equations. We will work through the material with a focus on understanding the concepts and practice solving problems using proper notation. This will build habits that allow you to succeed in future math courses.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

While I have not formally tutored linear algebra, I have spent my graduate studies working with these concepts extensively. It is essential to my PhD research in Chemical Reaction Network Theory. We will work through the material with a focus on understanding the concepts and practice solving problems using proper notation. This will build habits that allow you to succeed in future math courses.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I taught 3 sections of a course covering basic fractions through factoring quadratic equations, including basic geometry concepts. Additionally, I have 5 years of experience at a university drop in tutoring center, covering any course from prealgebra through differential equations. We will work through the material with a focus on understanding the concepts and practice solving problems using proper notation. This will build habits that allow you to succeed in future math courses.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I taught one section of a calculus class which covered some theory along with precalculus concepts. Additionally, I worked as a teaching assistant and grader for several years in introductory calculus courses, covering precalculus concepts. Also, I have 5 years of experience at a university drop in tutoring center, covering any course from prealgebra through differential equations. We will work through the material with a focus on understanding the concepts and practice solving problems using proper notation. This will build habits that allow you to succeed in future math courses.
Probability

Probability

While I have no formal tutoring or teaching experience in probability, I have coursework in university level probability and graduate level combinatorics. I can guide you through counting principles and probability distributions alongside your course material. We will work through the material with a focus on understanding the concepts and practice solving problems using proper notation. This will build habits that allow you to succeed in future math courses.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I taught one section of a calculus class which covered some theory along with precalculus concepts including basic trigonometry. Additionally, I worked as a teaching assistant and grader for several years in introductory calculus courses, covering trigonometry and inverse trigonometry functions. Also, I have 5 years of experience at a university drop in tutoring center, covering any course from prealgebra through differential equations. We will work through the material with a focus on understanding the concepts and practice solving problems using proper notation.
