Hi! My name is Graham W. and I’ve taught middle school ELA for 9 years. I taught in Boston, MA for 7 years and currently teach 5th grade in New Bedford, MA. Throughout my 9 years of formal teaching, I’ve tutored students on the side from grades 4th-12th. It’s been an incredible part of my job and I truly enjoy the one to one/small group instruction.

Much of the work I do deals with helping struggling readers and writers reach grade level expectations or push students who already meet those expectations to the next level. I also am very experienced with the writing process and familiarizing students with brainstorming, planning, rough drafting, editing/revising, and final drafting. Lastly, I specialize in helping students stay organized with school work and materials.

What makes me a strong English tutor is my experience and that I’ve worked with a wide variety of students. Working at a school, I have an incredible amount of resources at my finger tips. A large part of my job is building and implementing my own curriculum and differentiating that curriculum based on my students’ needs

If you’re in need of some help with anything literacy related or becoming a more organized/prepared student, then please reach out! I’d love to help.

Approved Subjects

Literature

Literature

Literature was a passion of mine in college. In the past few years I’ve done a lot of work in my school of picking the particular literature that is read from grades 5-8.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Through teaching the writing process, I’ve done copious amounts of work around editing/revising and distinguishing between the two. Instilling the skills to proofread their work before it’s handed in is a behavior I’ve pushed in my students during my whole career.
Reading

Reading

On a day to day basis, I work with students on their decoding, fluency, and reading comprehension skills. Much of the work I do also involves text selection and making sure my students have “just right” books that will increase their reading level and keep their interest.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Part of my literacy class includes Word Study, the study of words and their structure.
Writing

Writing

I’ve taught the writing process for 8+ years. Through teaching Years of genre study, I’ve immersed my students with the opportunities to write in many different genres and experiment with a variety of writing techniques.
