Hello, my name is Patty H. and my background is in both elementary education and special education. I have been substitute teaching in the public school system for over 20 years and want to help students who have been struggling with their learning during the Covid pandemic.

Even though my background and degree is in grades K-6, I have experience working with all students, K-12. Reading, writing, and reading comprehension are my favorite subjects to teach but I am also here to help with homework, study strategies, grammar, math, and other subject areas. Currently, I am using the Barton Reading and Spelling Program which is Orton Gillingham based and even though it was developed specifically for kids with dyslexia, it helps all struggling readers and spellers. In addition, I am using the Foundation in Sounds Program with students that weren't able to pass the Barton Student Screening. This is "a Pre-Reading Program that improves discrimination, memory, and sequence of sounds." I am looking forward to meeting you!

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have helped a variety of students, K-6 in all subject areas since I have been a substitute teacher in the public school system for over 20 years. My education includes a Masters of Arts and Teaching from Roger Williams University as well as all special education courses at Providence College.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have helped a variety of students with their math including problem solving, algebra, place value, measurement, and adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions.
Reading

Reading

Reading is essential for success in other subject areas and in life. I can help you with decoding, phonemic awareness, and reading comprehension. Some students can't learn to read phonetically so there are other methods to help them succeed.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is always taught with reading and not in isolation. One method that I have found successful was when students drew a picture of their vocabulary words as well as writing out the definition. This allows them to visualize the definition before writing it out. It is also important that students write out the definitions in their own words so that they can truly understand them.

Knowledgeable and patient

Tutoring sessions with Patty have been so worthwhile for my daughter! Patty has an amazing way of breaking things down so that they are understandable, and always keeping it light and fun. She is a very thoughtful teacher who puts a lot of thought into how she presents the material. Her lessons are engaging, useful, and she is very patient with my daughter always encouraging her to try. I would highly recommend Patty to anyone interested giving Wyzant a try.

Experienced and knowledgeable tutor

Patty is a patient, kind, and organized teacher. She connected very well with my 8 year old ADHD daughter over the last few months where we have met three times a week. It is evident that she is devoted to her profession and the children she works with. She made the process fun for my daughter who easily gets distracted. One of things I appreciated the most was the detailed recaps after every session. Patty really takes the time to share progress and challenges with parents along with what point in the curriculum they are at. She also is flexible with schedule changes and will work with you when things arise.

Excellent tutor -- Patient, kind, and flexible

Patty has been great! She has been working with my son on elementary school reading, spelling, and enunciation. She is very direct and helps to keep him on task. Being online has so much opportunity for distractions and she does a great job to help him stay focused and present for the sessions.

Patty was excellent with establishing rapport with our anxious child! She was patient and kind. She was extremely knowledgeable as well. She did a great job explaining the steps to both myself and my child.

Positive and Personable

She took her time with my daughter to help explain the problems and make sure she understood what she was learning. She also gave her extra tools to use when doing certain problems in school to help ease the complexity of the problem. She always great at interacting and knowing my daughters limits and what works for her. I love that she incorporates educational games which is much more conducive to my daughters learning allowing her to grasp concepts better. She also goes out of her way to share extra items or things we can do at home that will help her outside of tutoring as well.
