Hello, my name is Jess and I’m a fourth year medical student who is about to graduate and begin ophthalmology residency at Georgetown University. I graduated as valedictorian of my high school class, attended a 7 year BS/MD program for college and medical school (3 years undergrad and 4 years of medical school). I graduated summa cum laude from Penn State University, and am about to graduate from medical school in Alpha Omega Alpha honor society (top 15% of the class) and a member of Gold Humanism honor society, the two most prestigious societies a medical student can be inducted into.

Since I was 15 years old, I’ve been tutoring my peers and classmates. At 15, I was the coach for the pre-algebra math team, a team of 30 students that I taught after school every week for 2 hours. I would prepare one hour of lecture, assign problems for them to do, and then go over any specific questions they had about homework for the second hour.

When I was 16, I took the SAT and got a 2390/2400, with perfect scores (800) in math and reading, and a 790 in writing. I took the ACT when I was 17 and got a perfect score of 36. I began tutoring my peers right away and would teach them one on one. My approach to tutoring is focusing on the students’ weaknesses, and going over how to best approach the problem so they can have the skills to get the problem right the next time. It’s imperative that they understand why they missed the problem, and recognize how to approach it so they can avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

In medical school, our curriculum also forces students to teach other content that we learn every single week, and we were required to give PowerPoint presentations to our peers every week. As part of the academic honor society, I have also led classroom lectures to underclassmen to review concepts they went over in lecture before their exams.
