Hi! My name is Mei and I'm an English tutor! :-)

I earned my English degree at the University of Texas at Austin where I also completed my teaching certificate through the UTeach program. The UTeach program was an excellent training opportunity for beginner teachers that paired me with all three levels of schooling (elementary, middle, and high school) for a minimum of one semester. Although I enjoyed teaching all three levels, my favorite ages to teach are middle school and high school students.

What I enjoy about teaching is connecting with students and supporting their reading and writing habits, inspiring new ways to look at a text, and most importantly, boosting their confidence about their own reading and writing. I believe reading and writing should be a fun and positive experience for everyone. I believe it is an important life skill in all areas of learning (not just liberal arts but science and engineering as well).

I enjoy working one-on-one with students and have experience proofreading essays while offering advice and suggestions that do not take away from or minimize the student's own voice. I've helped teach essay writing, poetry analysis, and test preparation. I can offer guidance when a student is confused or in need of help with grammar or literature in a non-condescending or belittling manner. Instead of lecturing or teaching, I would like to learn together with the student on equal footing while occasionally offering my own experience and expertise.

Most importantly, I think I am super friendly and easy to talk to so there is no need to be shy or discouraged! Let me help you with your reading/writing, lend another pair of eyes to proofread, and alleviate stress when dealing with grammar!
