Raised in California, I attended UC Santa Cruz, majoring in Modern Literary Studies and Theater Arts: Film Production, earning Summa cum laude and a B.A. Then I attended UC Santa Barbara, where I studied English, earning a Master's and then a Ph.D., also Summa cum laude.

I have taught at UC Santa Barbara, the University of Colorado, Boulder and the University of Rhode Island. With more than 20 years of experience, a major teaching award, and boundless passion for literature, I am a highly experienced professor with a wealth of resources to help you reach your full potential as a reader, writer, and thinker.

I have taught courses at every level of the university curriculum, from introductory and General Education courses to major courses for undergraduates to graduate seminars for M.A. and doctoral students. I have a passion for all of the courses I teach and all of the different types of students who take them. My specialty is 18th and 19th century literature, particularly poetry. But I am adept with all genres of literature: short stories, novels, plays, essays, &c. I also love film and adaptation generally.

In addition to teaching students how and why to read literature, I am also experienced with training students to memorize and perform poems aloud as well as give effective oral presentations.

Finally, I am a skilled professor when it comes to training students to draft, compose, and edit written work.

I am a tenured Associate Professor of English and published author with more than 20 years of experience as a mentor, teacher, and writer. I specialize in the literature and culture of the 18th and 19th century British literary tradition, with a special love of poetry. However, I teach all genres and a wide variety of topics with this tradition and outside of it. A few examples of my courses within my area of expertise would be courses on British Romanticism, the sublime, and author courses on William Wordsworth, Jane Austen, and John Keats. Outside of this specialty, I have offered recent courses on Poetry Out Loud, Ancient Tragic Drama, and the topic of vengeance. I have taught students to read and write at every level of the curriculum, from freshmen and general education students through advanced doctoral students.
