Raised in California, I attended UC Santa Cruz, majoring in Modern Literary Studies and Theater Arts: Film Production, earning Summa cum laude and a B.A. Then I attended UC Santa Barbara, where I studied English, earning a Master's and then a Ph.D., also Summa cum laude.
I have taught at UC Santa Barbara, the University of Colorado, Boulder and the University of Rhode Island. With more than 20 years of experience, a major teaching award, and boundless passion for literature, I am a highly experienced professor with a wealth of resources to help you reach your full potential as a reader, writer, and thinker.
I have taught courses at every level of the university curriculum, from introductory and General Education courses to major courses for undergraduates to graduate seminars for M.A. and doctoral students. I have a passion for all of the courses I teach and all of the different types of students who take them. My specialty is 18th and 19th century literature, particularly poetry. But I am adept with all genres of literature: short stories, novels, plays, essays, &c. I also love film and adaptation generally.
In addition to teaching students how and why to read literature, I am also experienced with training students to memorize and perform poems aloud as well as give effective oral presentations.
Finally, I am a skilled professor when it comes to training students to draft, compose, and edit written work.
