About Kiera

Currently I work as a long term substitute school guidance counselor at Kikemuit Middle School in Warren, Rhode Island. I am in charge of the 6th grade students this year, and run lunch bunch groups, do individual counseling, student mediations, hold parent teacher conferences, attend SpEd. and 504 meetings, and team placements for the next school year.

From September 2015 to January 2016 I worked in a provisional pilot program, as a School-Based Clinical Therapist at Nathan Bishop Middle School in Providence, RI. This is one of 7 schools in the pilot program. My duties included completing intakes and initial assessments, offering individual and family counseling, collaboration with school administrators, social worker, psychologist, as well as other school staff. I was placed in the school doing mental health intakes, as well as individual and family counseling with students and families of student’s.

Starting in November 2011, I worked as a tenured School Guidance Counselor in a middle school on Maui (Lahaina Intermediate School), grades 6-8. This was a very culturally diverse population with groups such as Hawaiian, Filipino, Japanese, Tongan, Samoan, Mexican, and Caucasian. In this position, we started with the students in 6th grade and followed them until they were ready for high school. The job was a balance of individual counseling, group counseling including peer mediation and special groups such as grief groups. In addition, I was the gatekeeper with regards to academics. I initiated referrals for assessment, scheduled and held all parent teacher conferences for my grade level, coordinated with parents, teachers, and administration, tracked attendance records, worked with the Special Education and English Language Learner programs, and assisted with career education/planning. I ultimately did everything possible to help students achieve and pass on to the next grade level.
Previously, I worked as a Behavioral Health Specialist/Counselor at Lahaina Intermediate School for the Maui District Office-Hawaii DOE. I counseled student’s with counseling goals in their IEP’s as well as general education students who had been identified as at risk by academic grade level counselors. In addition, I attended IEP meetings, formulated counseling goals, conducted functional behavioral assessments, and created behavior support plans, did classroom observations and provided in class support, co-led counseling groups, and created rapport with academic teachers and other staff members on campus.

Before my position as a Behavioral Health Specialist, I worked as a School Counselor for the Valley Day Program through Gateway Health Care, a leading comprehensive mental health treatment company in Rhode Island. The Valley Day Program is a behavioral school which works hand in hand with the Rhode Island Department of Education in the special education department. I worked with kindergarten through eighth graders doing individual counseling, running counseling groups, and implementing treatment plans, as well as coordination with families, various school departments, DCYF, and other service providers.

Additionally, in the past, I worked as a Home Based Clinician at Family Service of Rhode Island. My work focused on the Children’s Intensive Services program, using a team approach that included psychiatric evaluation, case management, and intensive family, group, and individual therapy, in order to decrease the risk of psychiatric hospitalization or out-of-home placement. In servicing a diverse clientele from ages 4-17 with emotional and behavioral difficulties, every effort was made to stabilize the child at home through the provision of therapeutic treatment within all relevant settings (home, school, groups, and individual situations).
I took the NCMHCE licensure test in July 2008 and was certified as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Rhode Island as of February 2009. Furthermore, I received my licensure as a School Counselor K-12 from the Hawai'i Teacher Standards Board in September of 2011. Additionally, I have been certified in the State of Rhode Island as a School Counselor as well as a General Subject Matter Substitute, Grades PK-12, and in the State of Massachusetts as a School Guidance Counselor PreK-8 and Grades 5-12.

My goal is to work as a school counselor/school guidance counselor in the area, as this is the discipline I most enjoy. I would like to tutor as a way to stay connected to students and the education field. I believe that I would be an asset to a tutoring position, due to my varying experiences in the education/counseling disciplines. A position in this area, would provide me with the ideal opportunity to assist at your organization and to expand my counseling/teaching skills.

I excelled in Biology in high school and was a Biology major for 2 years of college.

I work as a middle school guidance counselor, therefore I am constantly teaching study skills to students. I was always a very organized student and paid attention to detail.

I have experience working with a multitude of students with ADD/ADHD during my multiple school based positions as well as my time working for mental health agencies. I have developed strategies which work well with these types of students.

I grew up playing tennis and played number 1, 2 singles and number 1 doubles for varsity high school tennis team. I also played USTA tournaments competitively.

Please contact me for your tutoring needs in these areas. I can also assist with language arts type skills as well.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
