I was born in Vermont, in northern New England, and moved to Puerto Rico in 1997. My BA and MA are from the University of California in Comparative Literature and French, respectively, and I earned a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the Universidad de Puerto Rico, Río Piedras in 2009.
My native language is American English, and I am fluent in French and Spanish. With over twenty years of language teaching experience, including twelve years of tenure as an Associate professor of linguistics at Macao Polytechnic Institute, I bring both academic training and real classroom practice to every lesson. This includes six years teaching Spanish to high school and undergraduate students, five years teaching French at the high school and university level, and extensive one-on-one tutoring experience with teens and adults.
When I begin working with a new student, my first step is always to understand their specific needs and goals. From there, I ask how many hours per session and sessions per week they'd like to commit to, then design lesson plans that target the skills most in need of practice, along with a consistent weekly schedule.
For example, as a graduate student at UCSD, I tutored a high school student in SAT verbal test prep. We met twice a week at the student's home, where I assigned vocabulary practice using past SAT exams and official College Board materials to prepare for the exam.
I ask that students or parents provide at least 24 hours' notice for any rescheduling or cancellations.
Whether you're looking to build foundational skills, prepare for an exam, or gain fluency and confidence in English, Spanish, or French, I'd love to help. Feel free to reach out with any questions or to schedule a lesson!
