I have a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Kansas, where I specialized in geomicrobiology and geobiology. I also hold an M.S. in Geology from the University of Kansas and bachelor’s degrees in both Geology and Biology from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. My research sits at the intersection of geology, biology, microbiology, chemistry, and environmental science, so I am comfortable helping students see the connections between these subjects rather than treating them as completely separate fields.
I have several years of experience teaching university students in science courses and laboratory settings. I enjoy working with students who may understand parts of a topic but are struggling to put the whole picture together. My approach is to first identify exactly where the confusion starts, work through the underlying concepts, and then build toward the more complicated material. I prefer helping students understand why something works instead of simply memorizing terminology or procedures.
I can help students with geology and Earth science, environmental science, biology, microbiology, and general chemistry, particularly at the high school and undergraduate levels. I can also help college students interpret scientific papers, understand figures and data, prepare for laboratory courses, and strengthen their scientific reasoning. Because my own work is highly interdisciplinary, I am especially comfortable with questions that cross traditional subject boundaries.
I am fluent in both English and Spanish and am happy to tutor in either language or work bilingually when that makes a difficult concept easier to understand. My goal is for students to leave a lesson not only knowing how to answer a particular question, but with a clearer understanding of the science behind it.
