Throughout my thirty-five years of teaching, I often had the privilege of tutoring those who were home bound as well as those who spent time with me after school. With the absence of peer pressure and classroom distractions, students could finally focus on the issues without the fear of peer ridicule. During those years, I tutored students from my own classes as well as those who were instructed by others.
Even though I have tutored those involved in an honors program to those from career technical program, the most challenging for me were those who only believed that failure was inevitable, regardless of the subject.
Being able to get them to overcome their negativity about school and life and to believe that success was actually possible was more than an arduous task. Only through my time and patience was this change possible. The eventual appearance of smiles and a look of accomplishment in their eyes were the best gifts that I ever had in my entire profession.
