Many learning problems are confidence issues that stem from missing fundamentals. I work to instill confidence by breaking advanced concepts down to basic parts and rebuilding self-esteem with new and improved skill sets. I focus on people (children & adults) over subject matter. With over 30 years of experience, and clients that range in age from four to 74, I am confident in my abilities with whatever subject is causing stress and struggle. As a parent myself, I recognize that tutors come and go, but parents are the constant homework help and teacher conference attendees. They need to know how they can help when the tutor is not around. As a result, I am willing to work with parents, too.
Fractions and decimals and number lines, oh my! I have had great success helping students skip-count their way to understanding multiplication tables. I bring manipulatives (blocks, chips, anything countable) so students develop better number sense. My students express more confidence from the first lesson, and most see letter grade improvement in three months.
As for ESL/ESOL, I have specific experience working for Obunsha (a Japanese learning academy in KY), spent two years teaching ESL in AR with Americorps, and my first WyzAnt tutee in PA was a Chinese exchange student.
My college degree is in English Lit with minors in Secondary Ed & Political Science. I'm a self-published author of over 50 books for all ages, including one on grammar & writing! Since 2015, I’ve also helped over 50 people write & publish their own books.
I took a break from WyzAnt in 2017. Returning to the platform, I see I have a one-star review. Someone was upset that I refused to complete their homework for them. Enough said.
Most students only need me for a short time and then outgrow me. Teaching is my privilege and passion. Won't you contact me to schedule a session and see for yourself?
