About Kristine

I spent thirty years working as teacher at a Quaker independent school in suburban Philadelphia where I taught students from seventh to twelfth grades. In classes of only 15 students, I was able to know students well and to create differentiated assignments to allow all students to succeed. Now that I have retired from the classroom, I want to continue my work with individual students. My varied experience as a tutor has made me flexible and responsive to what students need. I have helped seniors develop powerful personal essays for college admissions; I have tutored students in English, grammar, reading, history, and study and organizational skills; I have worked with students from China who attend U.S. schools; I have taught a "head start" seminar in Beijing for Chinese students coming to school in America. Tutoring gives me the opportunity to develop a relationship with each student and to fashion an individual learning plan.

I hold a B.A. in English with additional work in Religion and History from La Salle University. I have an M.A. in English from SUNY Buffalo. I have taught college-level courses in writing and literature to both traditional and adult students; I have also developed and taught high school literature seminars. Throughout my career, I have attended professional workshops to deepen my knowledge of pedagogical methods and to keep up with newly-discovered connections between the brain and learning.

I am flexible with time and can travel to see your student if that is more convenient.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I hold a B.A. in English with additional work in Religion and History from La Salle University. I have an M.A. in English with a minor in Women's Studies from SUNY Buffalo. Throughout my career, I have attended professional workshops to deepen my knowledge of pedagogical methods and to learn more about newly-discovered connections between the brain and learning.

I have a passion to share my love for books and writing with students. I believe that all students can improve academic skills and discover the joy of writing. As a writer myself, there is nothing more gratifying for me than to see students produce work to be proud of and begin to see themselves in different ways.

ESL/ESOL

I have five years experience working in the classroom with Chinese students at our school. My school admits about ten international students each year, so for the past few years I have had up to six students under my professional care in my tenth grade classes.

I also taught a "head start" seminar in Beijing in the summer of 2014 to Chinese students who were coming to American high schools. I helped them prepare for the different expectations and different methods of the American college-prep experience.

Grammar

It's not difficult to unravel the mysteries of English grammar, punctuation, and usage. I can be your guide through the thicket. I have years of experience teaching the intricacies of standard conventions and know many easily remembered jingles and rhymes to aid students' memory.

Religion

As an undergraduate, I had a minor in religious studies. This minor covered courses on Buddhism, Christian theology, and phenomenology. Since then, I have done extensive reading on the anthropology of religion.

World History

I am familiar with the WH general curriculum through tutoring and my own reading.

Writing

I teach writing as a process. A student learns not to respond to one assignment, but to think like a writer and to develop fluency at the sentence, paragraph and essay levels. Nothing is more critical to academic success in high school and college than firm command of writing skills. School work is language based, and the more competence a student has, the more success that student will enjoy.

Experienced and patient — Kristine has been an exceptional resource for the host daughter. My host daughter is from China and a freshman at a private school in PA. Kristine is helping her with writing. Sentence structure, verb tenses, capital letters, punctuation and citing sources are all tricky concepts for most Chinese students. Kristine is using her years of experience with other students to help my daughter navigate ...
