3-Year Writing Consultant at Colgate University

I'm Lydia! I graduated summa cum laude from Colgate University with a double major in English and Russian. At Colgate, I worked as a paid writing consultant for three years. In my work, I tailored appointments to a range of clients via in-depth training in brainstorming, thesis construction, organization, clarity, large- & small-scale cohesion, and grammar. I addressed various prompts, including application letters, senior theses, creative writing, and essays in the sciences and humanities, to help students of different backgrounds and interests. I even met additional needs presented by ESL students, who comprised 20% of all appointments, in order to elevate English literacy. In each one-on-one consultation, my goal was to improve a client’s writing by prioritizing their permanent growth as a writer, rather than a temporary improvement in grades. It is this same experience and enthusiasm that I will bring to our sessions!

My double major enhances my proficiency as a writing consultant. Studying English and Russian together has given me a unique understanding of language, grammar, and literature that an English major alone could not. Within my English major itself, I pursued a creative writing emphasis: my thesis was a chapbook of poetry, for which I earned an Honors distinction. My experience with poetry means that I am particularly knowledgeable in writing concise, powerful statements.
