About Marty

Teaching in a small, dedicated, onsite school is my full-time job. I teach courses and help students one-on-one in Advanced Engineering Mathematics, Physics, and Mechanics courses. This requires not only that I am well-grounded in these subjects, but that I am able to quickly diagnose weaknesses and help overcome them. I would be happy to work with you to enable you to improve your mastery of any of these general subjects. I am flexible and dedicated to providing the support you deserve. My goal is to turn you into a competent, capable, and enthusiastic student!

I have a strong background in Mathematics and Physics, both theoretical and applied. I believe that tutoring should be a collaborative effort, in which we work together to achieve your goals! College students and adult learners only, please!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

As an engineer, I have learned, extensively used, and taught calculus. It is amazing how powerful calculus is in solving many day-to-day problems in science and engineering. It is derived entirely from the fundamental axioms of mathematics, but many times students run into a roadblock that keeps them from attaining a full working knowledge of the subject. My aim will be to remove those obstacles, and it is my sincere wish to see you become as proficient and enthusiastic about calculus as I am!

Differential Equations

As an instructor in the Bettis Reactor Engineering School, which is a dedicated industrial undergraduate/first year graduate educational facility, I have taught the Mathematics course over 15 times. This 45-hour course includes approximately 20 hours on orthogonal functions, including Fourier Series, Bessel Functions, Legendre Polynomials, and partial differential equations. I have recently completed a graduate-level course (ME2001) in Differential Equations at U. Pittsburgh, which provided more in-depth material on both ordinary and partial differential equations.

Mechanical Engineering

Since 2000, my full-time job is as a staff instructor in a small industrial school that provides advanced education to engineers in various mechanical and nuclear engineering courses. Mechanical engineering courses that I am qualified to teach are Heat Transfer & Fluid Flow and Applied Structural Mechanics. Prior to teaching, I worked in industry for 12 years as a mechanical engineer. I have held an active Professional Engineer license in Pennsylvania since 1988.

Physics

Since 2000, my full-time job is as a staff instructor in a small industrial school that provides dedicated education to engineers in various mechanical and nuclear engineering courses. Naturally, these courses require a thorough understanding of physics by the students. Physics is an extremely powerful and elegant tool for understanding and predicting the behavior of objects in the universe. My goal will be not only to remove any obstacles in your way to understanding physics, but to see you become proficient and enthusiastic about it.

Exceeded expectations!!!!! — Honestly some of the most insightful help I have found in many years of trying to understand things. From only the short time of our two sessions (BOTH), I can only imagine the wealth of knowledge that Marty can easily relate to with me. I am a college student who gets very distracted and overwhelmed with all the very necessary information given to us for math and science subjects. I was extremely ...
