I am a retired professional engineer who continues to keep busy with amateur carpentry, gardening, bike riding, and skiing. My full-time job was teaching in a dedicated educational facility within a large engineering firm. The main purpose of the school was to give new employees, mostly recent college graduates, a solid foundation in nuclear and mechanical engineering, despite their varied technical backgrounds. In addition to teaching classes of typically 15 students, I provided one-on-one help to struggling students. Courses taught include: advanced engineering mathematics, applied structural mechanics, heat transfer and fluid flow, applied nuclear physics, reactor theory, reactor kinetics, and reactor power plant and core design.

Since retiring, I have also kept busy teaching as an adjunct professor in the mathematics departments of the University of Pittsburgh and the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC).

I have tutored online using various platforms, including WyzAnt, since 2016. Subjects that I have helped students with are Advanced Engineering Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Complex Variables, Differential Equations, Physics, Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Electrical Engineering, and Nuclear Engineering. My ratings and feedback indicate that my students are very happy with the results. Regardless of your background, I will tailor my delivery to fit your need. My goal is to make it so that you no longer need a tutor!

Beginning in 2025, if one student refers another student to me, the first student is eligible for a free half hour of tutoring, once both students have met with me for at least two hours each. So, if you improve as a result of meeting with me, please let others in your class know about it!

Calculus

Calculus

As an engineer, I have learned, extensively used, and taught calculus. It is amazing how powerful calculus is in solving many day-to-day problems in science and engineering. It is derived entirely from the fundamental axioms of mathematics, but many times students run into a roadblock that keeps them from attaining a full working knowledge of the subject. My aim will be to remove those obstacles, and it is my sincere wish to see you become as proficient and enthusiastic about calculus as I am!
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

As a Mathematics instructor in a graduate-level engineering school, I am very familiar with differential equations and techniques for solving them. Methods for solving ordinary differential equations include: Reduction of Order, the Method of Undetermined Coefficients, Variation of Parameters, the Frobenius Method, and various numerical approximation methods. Some differential equations that involve eigenvalues generate infinite series of orthogonal functions, including: Fourier Series, Bessel Functions, and Legendre Polynomials. Partial equations can be solved either numerically or using Separation of Variables. These are just a few of the methods that I can explain very clearly to you.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

As a Mathematics instructor in a graduate-level engineering school, I am very familiar with linear algebra and properties of matrices: vector spaces, linear transformations, determinants, rank, nullity (kernel), eigenvalues and eigenvectors. These are just a few of the aspects of linear algebra that I can explain very clearly to you.
Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering

Since 2000, my full-time job is as a staff instructor in a small industrial school that provides advanced education to engineers in various mechanical and nuclear engineering courses. Mechanical engineering courses that I am qualified to teach are Heat Transfer & Fluid Flow and Applied Structural Mechanics. Prior to teaching, I worked in industry for 12 years as a mechanical engineer. I have held an active Professional Engineer license in Pennsylvania since 1988.
Physics

Physics

Since 2000, my full-time job is as a staff instructor in a small industrial school that provides dedicated education to engineers in various mechanical and nuclear engineering courses. Naturally, these courses require a thorough understanding of physics by the students. Physics is an extremely powerful and elegant tool for understanding and predicting the behavior of objects in the universe. My goal will be not only to remove any obstacles in your way to understanding physics, but to see you become proficient and enthusiastic about it.

Professional, knowledgable, and patient

Marty has been an incredible tutor for me. We've covered two very difficult subjects now: fluid mechanics and mechanics of materials. He has answered many of my questions with patience and built my knowledge of both subjects from the ground up; he ensures you understand what he explains before moving on to the next subject and I always feel comfortable asking questions. My grades have significantly increased and it is all due to my weekly tutoring session with Marty!

Great tutoring experience with Marty!

I recently received tutoring in heat transfer and mechanics of materials, and it was a fantastic experience. Marty was incredibly knowledgeable, making complex concepts clear and understandable. His practical examples in heat transfer made the subject relatable, while his methodical breakdown of mechanics of materials simplified difficult topics. His personalized teaching approach was very effective, and his passion for teaching was evident. This tutoring not only improved my grades but also boosted my confidence in these challenging subjects. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a deep and engaging learning experience.

Extremely knowledgeable and easy to follow!

I am getting my Master's of Science in Aerospace Engineering at UAH and struggled with a Graduate Engineering Math class. The class includes, but is not limited to First, second, and higher-order linear ordinary differential equations. The class also includes Fourier Analysis and the professor does not want students using calculators or CAS. Marty has been patient with me and has answered all of my questions about the course.

Very well prepared

My question was a very specific application of mechanical engineering and fluid dynamics. I was expecting to need to give Marty a crash-course in the specifics of my problem, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that Marty had done a good amount of research in preparation for our session. He was well prepared and able to explain things in a way that I could understand. Highly recommended!

One of the most compotent and patient people I have ever worked with

I have been working with Marty about two months now. He helps me with my fluid mechanics class. He identifies how to solve problem quickly. I tend to struggle with the concepts quite a bit but he has always been very patient with me. I would highly recommend him to anyone I know.
