I'm Carolyn. I have always most enjoyed working one on one with adults and teens, and have been doing just that throughout my career. I have been a classroom teacher of both English language and literature and English as a Second Language, employed by a school board in Toronto, Canada, and later by a language school in New York and Philadelphia called ELS, so I am experienced with large groups. However, I took early retirement from the school board and switched to tutoring. During the pandemic lockdown, I started tutoring online and to my surprise found it quite effective! I have excellent online materials to share that help enrich the lessons and give students plenty of practice between lessons too.
My educational background includes an undergraduate degree (BA) from the University of Pennsylvania in English and an MA in English language and literature from the University of Toronto. I obtained teaching certification credentials from Smith College that gave me certification in New York State and Pennsylvania, and later was certified to teach secondary school in Ontario Canada where I also obtained additional qualifications in English and as an ESL specialist. I also became an instructor of ESL teachers at York University and the University of Toronto, and ran an ESL program for refugees in temporary housing.

In short, I have a great deal of education, training, and experience in English as a Second Language. And I am constantly learning and improving my practice as I work with students at any level one on one. My method is adjusting the teaching/learning process to the needs and interests of each student. Some people want to start learning English, others to become more fluent. Some people speak well, but need to improve their reading or writing or pronunciation. And so on. I create a program for each person, and welcome his/her requests and ideas.
