About Laura

Bio

I am an experienced chemistry tutor that would love the opportunity to work with you or your family. I have worked in the past as an adjunct chemistry professor at multiple area colleges. I am currently employed as a full-time professor and have been teaching different chemistry courses for 15 years.

I am currently employed as a full-time professor and have been teaching different chemistry courses for 15 years.

Outside of teaching, I have tutored over 1200 hours through this company in conjunction with other tutoring jobs. My students have ranged from middle and high school students studying math and all levels of chemistry to college chemistry students. The students that I work with who apply themselves have shown dramatic improvement - some in just a few sessions.

I have the philosophy that everyone can learn and also realize that not everyone learns by the same methods. As a tutor, I see it as my job to build upon the material given in the classroom to help students to understand. Sometimes, it takes a creative approach to help something make sense.
My qualifications are as follows: I received my BA in chemistry and biochemistry with a minor in forensic studies. My master's degree was earned in Inorganic Chemistry. As a teacher, I have explored teaching pedagogies and earned a Teaching certificate in Higher Education through the Harvard Bok school of learning. I am experienced in the use of active learning in the classroom and will bring this style of work into our tutoring sessions. Rather than just telling you how to solve a problem, I ask you to tell me your thought process and work to help you to figure it out.

I am a trained chemist and have been teaching chemistry at the university level for 15 years. As a result, I am very familiar with the material being taught to both high school students and college students. This is the subject that I have the most experience tutoring. I am able to tutor general chemistry at the high school, honors, AP, and college level. I am also able to explain organic laboratory techniques.

Although it has been some time since I attended elementary school, I do have a lot of experience working with young people in their studies. I regularly help my friend's children with their school work and have also helped my younger brother (who is ten years younger than myself) study a great deal throughout his childhood. I am familiar with the rules of grammar and reading, and feel that I could teach these with ease to children in elementary school. Additionally, I know the basics of mathematics and feel that I could teach any class successfully up to Algebra II. I am able to help with reading and writing as well, as I have much experience with writing.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Pre-Algebra is really a foundational subject. Students need this subject to be reinforced and to have good founding in this subject so that they can succeed in the more advanced math classes. I have tutored several students in pre-algebra, so I am well versed in the things that students find to be "tricky" and have developed techniques to trouble shoot these issues.
