I am Alex, a tutor with a bachelors in history and a masters and PhD in Education. Specifically, my doctorate is in Educational Psychology. What that means for you is that in addition to having knowledge of content areas like history, reading, writing and mathematics, I got my terminal degree in content that focuses on the psychology of the processes and methods of how people learn to better understand the best methods of learning and instruction. For those interested, a fair amount of my methods and practice come from application of the Dynamic Systems Model of Role Identity (Kaplan and Garner, 2017). At a basic level, this is a model developed to find ways to connect the learning material to each student at an individual level with the expectation that these connections can assist in enhancing internal student motivation to learn.
As for my practical experience, since my undergraduate education I have been a tutor to other undergraduates and now enjoy instructing undergraduate students as an adjunct. I've managed to attain both my masters and PhD while holding down a full-time administrative university job, so I have a lot of experience in time management and organization, something that I am happy to share. The topics that I've selected to tutor are those that I either have a degree in (such as history), have extensive experience in (such as writing, proofreading and editing) or have taken and passed advanced coursework for topics that would be pre-requisites (ex. I have taken and passed calculus as well as advanced statistical methods and feel I can appropriately tutor in pre-calculus courses and general statistics.).
