Today a musician can be an instrumentalist, a software engineer, and anything in between! The approaches to making music have never been more diverse, and my extensive experience as a musician living in working in the NYC area has given me to opportunity to participate in many.
I have worked as a gigging saxophone player, worked live sound engineering, worked as a composer and bandleader, and have worked in the studio as an electronic musician and traditional producer. These diverse experiences, along with decades of private teaching, give me a unique perspective on each individual field and how they all relate to one another.

As a graduate of William Paterson University's Jazz Studies program, I have been exposed to the work of many great composers, both in the field of jazz and classical music. Since graduation, I have composed many original works for small jazz ensembles, as well as classical chamber groups. My lessons focus on the fundamental building blocks of chords, melody and Roman Numeral analysis. I also put a great deal of focus on the ancient work of counterpoint and sight singing.

My undergraduate degree in Jazz Performance had a heavy focus on hear training that included identifying chord progressions, chord voicings, and transcribing melodies. Over decades of performance practice, I've developed these skills to aid my performance in jazz, as well as to communicate musical ideas to artists as a music producer.

I have over a decade of experience working with the DAW Ableton Live as well as the visual programming language Max/MSP. During my Master's work at NYU, I utilized both programs to create electroacoustic compositions centered on spatial audio rendering, and spent many years as an independent producer creating a library of commercial music and original tracks for vocal artists.

Music Theory

The field of music theory is very important to me and is one of my favorite subjects to teach. Learning about the structure of music- how to identify sounds, how to feel rhythm, and how to hear the motion of music is at the very heart of being a great performer, composer, and creator of music. Without these fundamentals, musicians are left to their own intuition which may limit their growth. I take students through the process of learning theory while at the same time showing them that the end goal is to internalize the material so that it does in fact become instinct. With a combination of intuition and intellect, the musician grows into a true artist. My process is individually tailored to each student- everyone is looking to enter the world of theory from a different style and skill level. I start with general concepts, and then move towards the specific style and needs of the student.

Saxophone is my main instrument--I studied saxophone at William Paterson University and attained a B.M in Jazz Performance. I spent roughly thirteen years playing and teaching professionally in the NYC area. Jobs with event bands, work as a creative bandleader, and countless hours of private lessons have given me a sophisticated feel for what students uniquely require for their development. I love teaching people of all ages, and hope to hear from you soon!

Sight Singing

I hold a degree In jazz performance from William Patterson university. A large part of the curriculum was sight singing based. I also already successfully teach ear training on this site, a subject extremely similar to sight singing.

Patient and professional tutor

David had his first lesson with my boyfriend and it was such a success. My boyfriend was clearly new to playing the guitar and David patiently explained everything in such a methodical and logical manner (which was perfect for my nerdy boyfriend).
