My name is Donald. I taught algebra, geometry and computer science in Chattanooga Tennessee Public Schools and Hamilton County Schools before I was employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority. My name is Donald. I taught algebra, geometry and computer science in Chattanooga Tennessee Public Schools and Hamilton County Schools before I was employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority. I had at one time teaching certificates in Tennessee and Georgia for grades K - 12 in mathematics and instrumental music.

I have worked on both sides, as a teacher and as a parent and advocate for students who needed modified resource help. By having goal mileposts and working with the student and resource teacher, I am able to accelerate the student in grade level or mainstream curriculum with an improved GPA and a high school diploma.

My musical training started very early. I had accompanied my sister to her piano lessons and she was learning to play the first movement of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata". I went to the piano and played "by ear" without a score what she had been learning. The piano teacher was intrigued and tested me and told my parents that I had "perfect" or "absolute pitch". Years later, I toured with the Chattanooga Boys Choir. My first visit to Pennsylvania was in 1966 during the 225th anniversary of York. After touring with the Boys Choir, having learned to play musical instruments, I played with the Youth Symphony Orchestra and later the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Association. Our church, Red Bank Baptist, had a sanctuary orchestra where I played for years.

I enjoy teaching and tutoring and I would really love the opportunity to instruct. Since retiring from TVA and moving to Pennsylvania with my wife, I have been seeking the opportunity to teach by enrolling in the Praxis series tests and applying for my Pennsylvania Teacher Certificate. I thank you for the chance to start this endeavor.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I enjoy Algebra 1 very much as a springboard to launch students into higher mathematics, Algebra 2, Trigonometry and Calculus. I use Excel spreadsheets for solving matrix and quadratic equations. I also have a virtual TI-89 for PC which is programmable for solving equations and graphing lines, parabola, hyperbola and ellipse. With these tools, I also have an Algebra 1 textbook with formulas, identities and exercises. It would be a pleasure to tutor to help anyone enjoy solving problems.
ASVAB

ASVAB

I had had the ASVAB administered to me at the reception station in Ft. Sill, OK. My score was high enough for me to be considered for OCS but I decided to become an NCO. I graduated from PLDC at Ft. Jackson, SC and was selected to attend BNCOC at Camp Shelby, MS. The ASVAB recommends your highest vocational (or MOS) potential.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have taught mathematics in public school and I still enjoy elementary mathematics even now, since I have retired. In a few more years, I shall be helping my grandson with his mathematics so I keep my lessons, resources and techniques available for him. I would be glad to help your student with elementary math.
Piano

Piano

I have been playing the piano since I was six years old. My first piano teacher discovered that I had perfect pitch when my sister played Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" first movement and I played what she had played "by ear". Later, I was a member of the Chattanooga Boys Choir where I played different instruments, including trumpet, French Horn and piano. I played the piano in Jr. and Sr. High School and my declared major in college was music education where I continued taking piano instruction. In the course of playing weekly for residents of The Lantern, I also taught a young student with a physical disability. She had been born with cerebral palsy. She had limited use of her right hand so we concentrated on playing with her left hand and therapeutically exercised her right hand. She had a wonderful attitude toward learning to play and I informed her that Maurice Ravel and Benjamin Britten had written pieces entirely for the left hand. I showed her the episode of M*A*S*H where an injured soldier, a piano player was given Ravel's score after he'd lost the use of his right hand. I enjoy playing hymns and teaching young students how to play the piano.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is an introductory course to algebra. The necessary skills for solving algebraic expressions are developed here. Students will learn the order of operations and understand the rule and its application to the hierarchy of the math operations. Also, students may work with monomials, binomials and polynomials. Students will be prepared for linear equations.
Trumpet

Trumpet

I am proficient in all brass instruments: trumpet, cornet, flugelhorn, altonium, French Horn, euphonium, baritone, trombone, tuba and sousaphone. I played bugle calls on the trumpet for R.O.T.C. and I played Purcell's "Trumpet Voluntary" for my friend's wedding. I played French Horn in the Chattanooga Youth Orchestra through High School. I was a member of the A.F.of M., playing in the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Association during my college years. Our church, Red Bank Baptist has a Sanctuary Orchestra where I played French Horn for several years. The trumpet is a B-flat transposing instrument. Three valves adjust the pitch produced. The open valve produces a tonic, octave, third, and fifth in what is described as "partials". The first valve lowers the pitch one whole step. The second valve lowers the pitch one-half step. The third valve lowers the pitch one and one-half step. By using different combinations, all chromatic tones can be produced. Beginning students will learn to develop embouchure and support from the diaphragm. They will learn major scales and chromatic scale. Intermediate students will learn alternative fingering and practice selected exercises. Discussion and demonstration of intonation with use of the ring finger slide or thumb trigger for notoriously out of tune notes like C#.

Awesome Tutor

First session with Donald was great. I learned a lot on our first session and he helped me catch up to the class being that I was a whole week behind. He is very patient and knows what he is talking about when it comes to algebra and other math problem solving. I plan to continue working with Donald for as long as I need him while I attend DeVry.edu. I would recommend Donald to anyone who is having arithmetic problems. He is easy to get a hold of and set dates when you need his help. I highly recommend Donald as a tutor or even a teacher.
