I have an N1-level JLPT certificate and a degree in East Asian Studies from University of Maryland, and have been teaching for 12+ years. I am based on the East Coast of the USA and share a studio at the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts with my father Alan.
I work with students of all ages, from middle school through adult! As someone who also learned Japanese as a second and not as my first language, I can help you find the study methods and approaches that work best for you. I aim to assist students in both understanding and communicating with confidence.
My lesson plans are completely personalized to the interests and goals of each student. I also offer group rates for 2 or more students, and specialized tutoring for test prep (JLPT, IB Japanese, AP Japanese, TOEFL, and 英検).
In addition to tutoring, I additionally work as a travel planner / guide for folks planning vacations in Japan.

I teach practical Japanese in combination with "textbook" Japanese -- I think a solid, traditional grammatical foundation is very important, but tying it in with real-world language use and examples from a variety of print and online media is important as well. What I teach also depends on what you need to know (for example, are you preparing for Japanese classes in college and want to be ready to ace tests in a particular curriculum, or are you hoping to travel to Japan for vacation and need basic conversational skills?). I like to switch up non-textbook materials based on student interests (gaming, authors, comics, travel, zoology, history, linguistics, etc!).

I also teach art - I have two decades experience with drawing traditionally and digitally (Photoshop, Procreate, etc), and can work with students on a variety of styles from realism to cartoons/anime. I am also able to give some guidance in the basics of using Blender for 3D modeling.

I schedule flexibly based on your budget, availability, and goals - anywhere from twice a week to once a month with assignments.

Contact me if you have any questions!

I teach drawing classes at the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts in Reading, PA, as well as at other local schools and art establishments/galleries. I have also traveled to out-of-state locations such as libraries and museums to give drawing workshops. I am also a working artist. I have several webcomics, take art commissions of all types, and work at anime conventions several times a year selling my artwork. I am experienced in a variety of drawing styles and can help students to improve their skills and develop their own style at the same time.

ESL/ESOL

I have several years of experience in teaching ESL to students of all ages (children - adult). I make sure to include real-world conversational, reading, and writing experiences in my ESL classes, tailored to my student's individual needs. I am fluent in Japanese and speak some Mandarin Chinese and so can be of particular assistance to ESL students whose first language is Japanese or Chinese, but I welcome ESL students of any language background.

Adaptive and strong!

Lily was quick to assess my knowledge level and begin tailoring our sessions. She is also resourced well enough to send me specific Japanese language relevant to my own English-based studies (EG: mycology, food, etc) as well as planning for my upcoming trip to Japan. Thank you Lily!

Perfect Tutor for Japanese Students

My daughter came to the U.S. when she was 9 years old from Japan and we knew we needed an ESL-oriented teacher and found Lily, who is bilingual in English and Japanese here. We think she is a wonderful teacher because she makes every effort to make each class enjoyable. When my daughter could hardly speak English yet, Lily gently communicated with her in Japanese. Thanks to her, my daughter's English ability has been improving and her school life is no longer a problem. She also did a great lessons for the Eiken test, and my daughter passed the Eiken Level pre2 test only 6 months after coming to the US.

10/10!!!

I think I have enough lessons now to accurately rate Lily. Easily the best decision I've made so far about learning Japanese. There's a lot that gets missed trying to learn everything through a textbook. Lily not only does a great job of filling in those gaps, she's also extremely patient and willing to work at whatever pace you want to set. I'm pretty dense, so this is essential. She's super professional, but not suffocatingly so, and offers great schedule flexibility. Can't recommend her enough!

Very helpful and knowledgeable

My son has been learning Japanese for a trip to Japan this summer before college, but with the pandemic, his trip may be cancelled. Even though he may not get to use it, he STILL looks forward to his lesson with Lily and how well she helps him put together everything he has already learned. She also gave him references for practice books and text books. Thank you!

Good teacher or Elementary school kids and adults

Lily has been able to work with all 3 of my kids that are 3 diiferent ages, 13, 11, 6; as well as myself in a fun, interactive and educational way! We have been learning how to use some verbs, like "I eat x" in the positie/negative form, how to count, and some basic phrases, like Konnichiwa! Lily also always has a fun andbintrresting factoid to share about the Japanese culture, like the Japanese like to eat KFC for Christmas! She has been a great teacher!

A great tutor who is patient and knowledgeable

Lily C. is a great tutor for me to get back into my Japanese language studies. We were able to understand each other from the very beginning and she was patient with me as I shook the cobwebs off of what I already had learned. I believe that she will be able to get me closer to my goal of becoming fluent and she even offered different exercises to help with speaking practice. She suggested different reading materials and programs to help my studies and she was very knowledgeable about the language. I appreciate her thoroughly and I look forward to working with her!

Knowledgeable, patient, and nice tutor

Lily was really patient and helped me prep for a job interview in Japanese. We went over technology terms and ways to phrase questions for business interviews. She has a calm, fun personality and would recommend her as a tutor!
