Hi, I'm Emma! I graduated from Horace Mann School in 2018 and from Eugene Lang College at the New School in 2021, as well as completing coursework at Phillips Exeter Academy in 2016 and 2017. I am now based in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh, where I love meeting new people at synagogue and browsing at the local bookstores. I have five years teaching experience at Uptown Stories, a creative writing education nonprofit in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York. I've taught personal essays, short fiction, poetry, fantasy writing, and graphic novel narrative at Uptown Stories, and additionally lead high school application essay workshops in 2019 and 2020 at Bank Street School in New York. I've taught the 7-15 age group, and appreciate how classroom experience helped me learn to think on my feet and be resourceful. I am also a capable editor and love helping a piece of writing take shape through editorial guidance; I served as an editor at my college's chapter of Her Campus and at the online art publication UP Magazine, where I am currently a contributor.
As a college essay tutor, my students have gone on to Brown University, the University of Virginia, University of Southern California, and more. I have worked with high school and middle school students to improve their quality of writing and help them find their voice. I love the individual focus tutoring allows and the ability to form lasting relationships with students, and I would be happy to work with you, whether to see the contemporary relevance in Jane Eyre or learn the difference between "farther" and "further."
Please contact me to set up lessons, I am in Pittsburgh as of August 31st and am happy to either work remotely or come to your home. For me, tutoring writing is a way to help students who may not like the subject feel more comfortable with it and even enjoy it. Writing is the practice of learning to speak for yourself and develop your voice. What could be more fun than that?
