Two of my favorite things to do are playing music and sharing my knowledge of music with other people. I have a BA in Music from Florida State University and a Master of Music in Viola Performance at Penn State University, where I was a teaching assistant. Currently I am an Advanced Music Studies Certificate student at Carnegie Mellon University, where I have received a full scholarship.

As a current resident of Pittsburgh, I enjoy giving lessons and playing in a number of nearby professional symphonies. I am a member of the Johnstown Symphony, and the Altoona Symphony, where I am principal violist. I also look forward to playing with the National Repertory Orchestra for the summer 2021 season. Aside from playing traditional classical music, I have helped keep modern instrumental music alive by participating in recordings for bands and composers such as Scott Slapin and The New 76ers.

In my five years of teaching I have worked with different students from children to adult and from beginner to advanced-intermediate levels. I have given lessons to engineering students, bodybuilders, musicians who play other instruments, and people who just have an itch for learning the violin or viola. As someone who has taught as both a private instructor and as a sectional coach for youth orchestras, I prefer smaller settings where students can get more one-one attention. Although learning a new instrument is never easy, I believe that lessons should be positive experiences that lead to a strong appreciation of everything that music has to offer.

I have studied the viola at Florida State University, Penn State University, and Carnegie Mellon University. I have been a contracted member of numerous professional orchestras, including the Tallahassee Symphony, Cheyenne Symphony, Altoona Symphony (principal), and Johnstown Symphony. This past summer, I was invited to play with the National Repertory Orchestra: a summer festival in Colorado that provides a full fellowship to all of its students. When I am not performing, I like to teach and I currently give online Zoom lessons through the Musika platform.

Great and kind tutor

I am an adult intermediate and appreciate Charlie’s patience and knowledge when trying to improve . We’ve had two lessons and I’ve enjoyed them immensely. The online format is very easy to navigate and helpful for scheduling purposes. Would highly recommend Charlie to anyone looking for a violin tutor!

Great tips and supportive teaching

I came away from my first lesson with a few really smart, clear tips on how to improve my playing. It felt like time well spent and I can already hear the difference. Charlie also has a really supportive, kind way of teaching. Definitely recommend!

Knowledgeable and Patient tutor

Mr Charlie is an excellent tutor. He has been teaching my daughter for almost 2 months now and has helped her refine her advance techniques in order to play high level music. He has helped her with difficult music pieces and facilitated her in reaching her goals in school. She has been placed in honor orchestra now.

Increased interest in playing the viola.

Enjoys attending the classes. Which is very important when in an orchestra class for school. Much greater chance of success altogether. Glad we located him on Wyzant!

So Kind

Charlie is very knowledgeable and patient. My son just adores him and says he is very nice. We are very happy with our experience working with Charlie. My son is excited for class every week and Charlie makes it fun and he is very flexible with his schedule.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Charlie has been teaching my wife to play the violin. He seems very capable and he is very patient. She started playing as an adult and has been mainly self taught so that always presents issues for any tutor. I used to tutor guitar a long time ago, so I understand the challenges. Thus far I'm very satisfied.
