Hi, I'm Eilis! I am a Nursing Major at University of Pittsburgh. I have experienced a combination of homeschooling, private and public education. I attended a Classical Conversations homeschooling co-op where I was classically taught Math, Science, Latin, History, Literature, Logic, Philosophy, Socratic Dialogue, and Speech and Debate.
During co-op days, I led and/or participated in student-led conversations about the subjects we were learning. Throughout my time at the co-op, I journeyed through the Saxon Math curriculum, from Saxon 8/7 to Advanced Mathematics. In a typical Math Seminar, students brought math problems to class that they were struggling with. The class, then, discussed the mathematical concepts concerned and solved the problem together. When tutoring or leading the math seminar, I aim to understand the concept first and then explain it to the struggling student. Then, as I have been classically trained, I work through examples with the student until they feel confident to complete them on their own. Of course, each student is different as to the teaching style they respond best to. Thus, I am flexible and can modify the lessons and my teaching style to fit each student’s case.
As stated before, I used the Saxon Math curriculum which hammers into your brain mathematical concepts through consistent practice. I studied math on my own asking my parents and class for help occasionally. I also completed the SAT twice attaining the scores of 690 and 650. I do not have years of experience tutoring specifically but I have six years of experience with helping classmates through problematic math problems and teaching them new concepts such as college statistics.
