Bio

Hi, I'm Will!

I've been teaching math one-on-one for 15+ years. I started in high school, tutoring my peers in a variety subjects -- geometry, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. In college, I continued to tutor in math -- mainly algebra, discrete math, and calculus. While pursuing my MS and PhD, I taught logic classes to undergraduate students, and expanded the topics that I tutored -- graph theory, logic, game theory, decision theory, topology, and category theory, to name a few.

I received perfect scores on the ACT, SAT, and GRE math sections, and am equipped to tutor in any of these. I've studied, tutored, or taught nearly any math topic you'll find at the HS/undergrad level: algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, statistics, discrete math, probability theory, graph theory, topology, game theory, combinatorics, decision theory, propositional logic, predicate logic, model theory, category theory, and more. I have a BS in Mathematics (Gonzaga University), and an MS and PhD in Logic, Computation, and Methodology of Science (Carnegie Mellon University).

I'll also say a few words about my teaching philosophy. I think it is important to adapt one's teaching style to each student -- in fact, this is why I enjoy tutoring in math 1-on-1.

Many students struggle with math not because they cannot perform the reasoning involved, but because the material was framed using foreign vocabulary or concepts. Once things are presented in more familiar terminology, they will often 'click' for the student. I am well-practiced at identifying these points of disconnect, and re-framing the material in a way that is friendlier to the student.

Discrete Math

Discrete Math

I am well-practiced in teaching all of the topics in a standard discrete math course; I have tutored for discrete math courses across a number of different colleges. I first learned discrete math in pursuit of my BS in mathematics, and then came to master the topic during my MS/PhD studies, which required fluency in the subject.
Finite Math

Finite Math

I have a PhD in logic from Carnegie Mellon University, which is consistently ranked one of the world's top universities for math and programming. I regularly use finite math in my research, and have 10+ years experience teaching topics of finite math at the college level, including the following, among others: sets, set theory, logical reasoning, permutations, probability, graphs, proofs, combinatorics, Markov processes/chains, discrete math, algebra, matrices and more. I am very comfortable and familiar with these topics, and customize the way that I present them to suit the student's learning needs.
Logic

Logic

I have a PhD in logic from Carnegie Mellon University, which is consistently ranked one of the world's top universities for math and programming. I have taught introductory and advanced logic topics in classes, seminars, and online, and am experienced in teaching the following topics, among others: propositional (or 'sentential') logic, first-order logic, set theory, modal logic, axioms, proofs, semantics, syntax, truth tables, validity, philosophical logic, formal logic, and more. I am also familiar with current trends in logic, and am a published researcher.

Extremely knowledgeable and patient tutor

I had Will help me out with some material in set theory and logic. He couldn't have been more helpful, patient, and well-informed on the subject. He also was able to supply crucial context to help me better grasp the material, and useful ways of rephrasing things when a particular concept didn't make sense. Highly recommended!

Amazing teacher

Will is very calm but very sharp. He is familiar with the materials and he isn’t burnt out like some of the teachers. He is willing to explain and even find similar problems to test if student really understands. I already scheduled the next lesson and looking forward to working with him again.

Excellent tutor

Message from my son: "I learned about indirect proofs in a way that was easily understandable and clear. I was able to have all of my questions answered and was able to get all of my doubts cleared."
