About Fidelia

A few things about me:

Hi! I am an artistic, analytical, adventure-loving person. I love to travel (11 countries and counting!), and I love to spend quality time with long-term friends. Christmas is my favorite season (it's more than a day). And I love mountain sports (skiing, hiking, rafting, etc.) As a tutor, I love discovering with students what it is they love, what they want out of what they're studying, and how we can get there together.

Qualifications:

I am a skilled researcher and writer, gleaning from 8 years of successfully completed research and writing projects throughout high school and college. I received five academic and character awards at Wheaton College, and am a member of four academic honor societies (collegiate and high school). An example of my writing experience: I conducted a year-long research project in 2015, developed the research into an 80-page thesis, defended the thesis before a panel of professors, and thereby earned History Departmental Honors. I also have experience in grant writing and in public speaking (both academic public speaking and public speaking in the non-profit business world). I have significant experience working with children, teens, and young adults. I currently work full-time with youth in Pittsburgh. I volunteered as an elementary-school tutor during college, and I volunteered as a teen summer camp counselor every summer for the past four years.

Learning Philosophy:

I firmly believe that every student is capable accomplishing more than he or she realizes. There are many avenues to learning, and the key to teaching or self-teaching lies in finding the avenue that works for the student as an individual. I balance a love of learning (sheer curiosity) with a need for focus and goal-setting (purpose). The first without the second is aimless and disappointing in the long run, while the second without the first is suffocating and unhealthy. My aspiration is to help students to identify their interests/passions and to pursue them in a structured and purposeful way. Let's take all those wonderful and exciting thoughts in your head and effectively and intelligently communicate them in your unique writing style!

Other things:
Former National Merit Finalist (PSAT).

Degrees:
Certificate in Biblical Studies from Rosedale Bible College.
B.A. History; Political Science from Wheaton College, IL.

Honor Societies:
Pi Sigma Alpha, National Political Science Honor Society
Phi Alpha Theta, National History Honor Society
Wheaton College Scholastic Honor Society
National Society of High School Scholars

If you have any more specific questions, please message me! I welcome honest concerns regarding specific student needs, and I will always answer questions honestly in return. I hope to meet some of you soon and begin creating and editing your written work together.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have a Bachelor's degree in History, during which I concentrated on U.S. History. I have taken the following classes: U.S. War and Patriotism, American Revolution, History of American Pop Music, History of Christianity in the U.S. I also studied U.S. Political History and Government, and U.S. Welfare Politics.

Bible Studies

I received a Certificate in Biblical Studies from Rosedale Bible College in 2012. I also took classes on "New Testament Survey", "Old Testament Archaeology", the Book of James, the Book of Revelation, and a survey of "Christian Thought" during my four years at Wheaton College.

Government & Politics

I have a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Wheaton College, IL. I have taken classes on U.S. Government, Political Philosophy, U.S. Welfare Politics, U.S. Supreme Court and Legal System, U.S. Criminal Procedure, and International Relations.

Political Science

I have my bachelor's degree in political science. I was a teacher's assistant / research assistant in the Wheaton College political science department.

PSAT

I was a National Merit Finalist on the PSAT when I took it. I also went on to score highly on the SAT and ACT.

Religion

I have taken a college class on World Religions, as well as two college classes on theology (as opposed to Biblical Studies). I have a Certificate in Biblical Studies from Rosedale Bible College. I am planning to attend grad school for Religious studies next fall.

SAT Writing

I scored highly on the SAT writing portion of the exam, when I took it. Beyond that, I have demonstrated myself to be a skilled writer by placing 3rd in a campus-wide essay contest in college, earning academic honors for an 80-page research thesis I finished last year, earning grant funding for a grant I wrote and submitted two years ago, and editing/tutoring writing assignments in volunteer positions throughout college.

Social Studies

I have a bachelor's degree in Political Science, which intersects with high school level Social Studies tremendously.

Spanish

Four years of high school Spanish.
Spanish AP exam score of 5 (highest score possible).
Three language-immersion trips to Mexico, and one to Nicaragua.
One-semester internship at immigration law firm, requiring bilingual (Spanish and English) interaction with clients.

Vocabulary

I have a double-majored Bachelor degree that required me to read and write proficiently in college. I have completed dozens of A-level research projects, and I have won awards for several of them. All of these research projects required excellent use of vocabulary. My high scores on the PSAT, SAT, and ACT all reflect strong vocabulary skills as well. The grammar, reading, and vocabulary sections were always my highest scores.

World History

I have a bachelor's degree in History from Wheaton College, IL. I have taken classes such as British History, the History of the Modern Middle East, the Politics of International Relations, the Politics of Human Trafficking, Third World Issues, Transforming Poverty in the Global South, and Ancient Archaeology.

Writing

I have written multiple award-winning essays myself and have edited scholarship-earning essays for other students.
