Hi! I'm Bret, a behavioral scientist by training. My degrees led to a career in data science, with lots of research design, hypothesis testing, correlation, regression, and machine learning, plus programming in SQL, Python, and R and a fair share of math. I've worked for Fortune 500 companies and as a consultant for clients including Nike, Gerber, Amex, and Goodyear.

I've also taught statistics and data analysis at the college level for more than a decade, most recently in the University of Texas system, including dual-enrollment courses for high school seniors. That mix of teaching and industry experience means I bring real-world examples that will help you pass your class and grow professionally.

I tutor psychology, statistics (including behavioral and social science statistics), research methods, Excel, SQL, SAS, Python, and R. I also help college students with writing, especially research papers and analytical essays. I've supervised many college research projects, and framing an argument or research question is one of my strengths.

In our sessions, we start with what you already understand, translate the symbols into plain language, and work problems step by step, using your own coursework whenever possible.

I hold a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Sociology, with additional PhD-level coursework in advanced statistical methods. In 2018, I received the Thomas J. O'Reilly Innovation Award for bringing predictive analytics to criminal justice.

Outside of data, I've been a photographer since high school and have worked in Los Angeles as a photographer and retoucher, so I also tutor Photoshop and Lightroom.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

I tutored test prep for 5 years with both high school students and college students. I also completed over 6 english courses in college. Lastly I conduct technical research which requires a logical structure.
Adobe Lightroom

Adobe Lightroom

I am a commercial photographer and have used Adobe Lightroom extensively in professional client work, from importing raw files through final delivery. I use it alongside Adobe Bridge and Photoshop as part of a complete production workflow. Applied work includes: - Importing and processing raw files, and navigating the Library and Develop modules efficiently. - Adjusting exposure, white balance, and tone, including tone curves for precise contrast and color control. - Color correction to achieve accurate, consistent color across a shoot. - Sharpening and noise reduction for both web and print output. - Applying filters and effects to create a consistent look. - Syncing adjustments across multiple photos at once for efficient batch editing. - Integrating with Bridge and Photoshop, including round-trip editing for detailed retouching. - Creating custom identity plates to brand the interface, slideshows, prints, and web galleries. - Exporting to web-friendly formats with appropriate size, resolution, and quality settings. - Creating online galleries for client review and selection. - Designing photo books in the Book module. I can teach both the software and the photographer's reasoning behind it: how to read a histogram, when to fix something in Lightroom versus Photoshop, and how to build a workflow that saves time on large shoots.
Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop

I have used Photoshop to create brochures, PDFs, and—most importantly—retouch photographs. Retouching was an essential part of my workflow for photography. My work was for beauty, fashion and editorial work. I have been published in several magazines and worked for agencies on the east and west coasts.
Data Analysis

Data Analysis

I am a data scientist using advanced statistical methods (KNN, logistic regression, hierarchical clustering, random forests) in an applied business setting. I have done this for over a decade. I have also taught at the university level including courses that blend statistics and programming. I love helping students work their way through this topic by establishing strong foundations and showing them how the concepts are connected.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

Working as a data scientist, I have to know math. I use these basic calculations in pretty much everything I do -- from finding averages, squaring numbers and taking the square root of numbers. I also use algebra to graph functions.
Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel

I am a data scientist of 20 years of experience and use excel to summarize and present to executives for various key performance indicators in the business like revenue trends, number of sales calls, emails open and click rates,, etc.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Data science relies on a lot of math, algebra and higher level mathematics. I use these skills in a lot of what I do -- solving equations, graphing functions and the like. I also have taught statistics which uses a lot of these concepts. I believe building a strong foundation is important for students, and these concepts build on each other so showing them the ways in which the concepts relate to what they already know is a pathway to success.
Psychology

Psychology

I have a 4-year degree in psychology from Baldwin-Wallace College. I also work as a data scientist using the psychological methods and statistics in my work. I have further social psychology coursework that I completed in my Master's in Sociology program. I have taught at the university level as well.
SPSS

SPSS

SPSS was the first stats package I used. I used it for my academic research, using both the GUI interface as well as the coding window (esp for importing large datasets). I used it professionally at 2 different jobs as well, including Kaiser Permanente and The Goodyear Tire and Rubber World HQ. I used it for t-tests as well as predictive modeling (regression and logistic regression), as well as various descriptive statistics and graphing.
SQL

SQL

I have worked with Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies, leveraging SQL, SAS, SPSS, Python, and R throughout my career. I use SQL extensively to extract, analyze, and summarize data, with current focus on Common Table Expressions (CTEs) and modern data science platforms. My expertise includes cloud-based analytics environments like Snowflake and other scalable data platforms. This combination of enterprise-scale experience and contemporary tool proficiency positions me to deliver quality tutoring sessions.
Statistics

Statistics

I taught at community colleges and the University of Texas at Arlington for over 10 years, and also supervised quantitative research projects. In my free time I tutored students in statistics. I have also worked as a data scientists for 20 years, and program statistical tests in R and Python. I love teaching, and find it rewarding to help students connect the dots.
Writing

Writing

I supervise student research projects, which involved extensive writing. I also work as a tutor. I have an extensive set of completed college courses in English, writing, literature and poetry.
