Hi, I’m Leonardo, and I am excited to share my passion for history with you! I have a PhD in History from the University of Pittsburgh, as well as previous degrees in History and Literary Studies. I have taught over twenty-five sections of college-level courses on the history of Latin America, the United States, World History, and the Global History of Piracy. Additionally, I obtained a Teaching World History Credential through the University of Pittsburgh’s World History Center, and I have worked as a teaching assistant for courses on Western Civilization and East Asian History.

Besides helping you achieve your immediate learning goals, my objective as an educator is to help you see history as a tool for making sense of the world and your place in it. My teaching approach is primarily based on the Socratic method: I want you to question your preconceptions about the past and the study of history through the analysis of primary sources and case studies. Ideally, our tutoring sessions will help you think creatively and critically about evidence, causality, and change, which are some of the basic pillars of historical knowledge.

I enjoy the opportunity to work with students in one-on-one sessions, whether they need additional help or because they wish to explore certain topics more deeply. According to my end-of-semester evaluations, most students agreed with my effective class preparation, ability to clarify complex concepts, and capacity to create a respectful and inclusive learning environment.

I am a native Spanish speaker, and I have also worked as a teacher of English as a second language. While my published research focuses on early modern Latin American, European, and World Histories, I also possess extensive expertise on topics in Geography, Art History, Spanish language and culture, and Literature.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule tutoring sessions!
