Hello! My name is Brittany, and I am a former university lecturer and tutor with more than 10 years of teaching experience. I'm a graduate of one of the best creative writing program in the world, the Nonfiction Writing Program at the University of Iowa. At Iowa, I taught both creative writing and rhetoric/composition courses. I also tutored in the Writing Center, and helped dozens of students improve their writing in one-on-one settings. I've won or been nominated for awards for championing student success, for helping students make the leap from high school to college, and for being one of the top teachers in the Honors Program.
I love helping students reach their full potential in the classroom. I'll start by getting to know your student using some tried-and-true methods. Then I'll work with their strengths to help pull them up in those areas where they need some extra help. I use a simple "ladder" tutoring technique to help students develop their skills: I Do the Task, You Watch; We Do the Task Together; You Do the Task Alone, I Watch. Then, your student is off to the races, doing the work on their own that they didn't think they could do before.
My long-term experience as a teacher of diverse students from all backgrounds has taught me how to explain concepts in a number of ways. I promise to find the right explanation to help your student understand tough concepts. I also studied and learned a second language (Italian) as an adult, and I use that experience to help me remember what it's like to learn something new.
A little more about me: I am the recipient of a Fulbright fellowship, and I lived in Italy for two years conducting research in small Italian villages. My creative writing has been published by several literary magazines. I earned my bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland Phillip Merrill College of Journalism in 2010, and I went on to work for ABC and CBS stations across the U.S.
